Village in Chhattisgarh Renamed from Chandarpur to Chandanpur, Residents Celebrate New Identity

Kabirdham, Chhattisgarh: A small village in India’s Chhattisgarh state has received a new name—and with it, a renewed sense of dignity and hope. The village formerly known as Chandarpur has officially been renamed Chandanpur, following a state government notification published in the official gazette.

For decades, residents said the old name often caused embarrassment and emotional distress. Villagers recalled facing mockery and uncomfortable reactions when they mentioned their hometown while applying for jobs, pursuing education, or traveling outside the area. Many said the name negatively affected their self-respect.

As news of the name change spread, celebrations broke out across the village. Elderly residents, youth, and children alike expressed happiness and relief, calling the decision a long-awaited victory for their community.

“With the new name, our confidence has increased,” said a local resident. “Chandanpur represents positivity, respect, and a better identity. Future generations will feel proud of where they come from.”

Residents credited Vijay Sharma, the local legislator and state minister, for taking the community’s demand seriously and pushing the proposal at the government level. Villagers publicly thanked him for helping the village gain a new and dignified identity.

Community leaders say the renaming of Chandanpur is more than a symbolic change—it reflects a broader shift in social thinking and the importance of self-respect. The village now stands as an example of how identity can shape confidence and social acceptance.

Following the renaming, villagers are hopeful that development will follow. They have urged authorities to improve basic infrastructure and public amenities, saying that along with a new name, they now expect a transformed future.

Today, Chandanpur is being seen not just as a renamed village, but as a symbol of social change, renewed pride, and the triumph of dignity.
