UN General Assembly backs the “Correct the Map” initiative with 164 votes; the United States votes against while six countries abstain
New Delhi: The world may soon start looking different on classroom walls, in textbooks and in other maps used around the globe. The United Nations General Assembly has backed a resolution promoting the use of world maps that represent the relative sizes of continents more accurately, particularly the size of Africa.
The resolution, introduced by Togo on behalf of the African Union, received overwhelming support, with 164 countries voting in favour, the United States voting against and six countries abstaining.
The initiative, known as “Correct the Map,” promotes equal-area projections such as the Equal Earth projection, which provides a more proportionally accurate representation of the size of continents than the centuries-old Mercator projection.
Why Does Africa Look ‘Bigger’ on the New Map?
The change is not because Africa itself has become larger. Africa’s actual geographical area has not changed at all.
The difference comes from the way the Earth’s three-dimensional surface is represented on a two-dimensional map.
The widely used Mercator projection, developed by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569, was designed primarily for navigation. It preserves directions and angles effectively, making it particularly useful for maritime navigation.
However, the projection significantly exaggerates the size of regions closer to the North and South Poles while making areas around the Equator appear relatively smaller.
As a result, Greenland can appear roughly comparable in size to Africa on a conventional Mercator map, even though Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland.
What Is the Equal Earth Projection?
The Equal Earth projection, developed in 2018 by cartographers Tom Patterson, Bojan Šavrič and Bernhard Jenny, is an equal-area map projection.
Its key objective is to preserve the relative area of continents and countries more accurately.
That means Africa appears much larger relative to Europe and Greenland than it does on a Mercator map. At the same time, the new projection accepts some distortion in shapes because no flat map can perfectly preserve area, shape, distance and direction simultaneously.
The UN resolution therefore represents a move toward maps that give greater priority to relative land area rather than navigation-friendly angles.
Where Is India on the New Map?
India remains exactly where it was geographically.
There is no change to India’s geographical location, borders or actual size as a result of the new map.
What changes is how India’s size and position appear relative to other countries and continents when the globe is projected onto a flat surface.
So, if you look at India on an Equal Earth map, you may notice differences in its visual proportions compared with a Mercator map. But India has not physically become larger or smaller, nor have its international boundaries changed.
Why Did the UN Support the Change?
Supporters of the initiative argue that maps are not merely technical tools. They can also influence how people understand the relative importance and scale of different parts of the world.
African countries have long criticised the way conventional Mercator maps visually minimise Africa while enlarging Europe, North America and other high-latitude regions.
Togo led the initiative with support from the African Union. Foreign Minister Robert Dussey argued that correcting the way the world is visually represented is part of creating a fairer understanding of global geography.
The campaign has therefore taken on a wider significance, extending beyond cartography into education, history and perceptions of Africa’s place in the world.
164 Countries Supported the Resolution
The voting result was overwhelmingly in favour of the proposal:

The United States was the only country to vote against the resolution.
Washington criticised the initiative, arguing that the UN should focus on more pressing global issues and describing the proposal as connected to an ideological agenda.
France and Other Countries Back the Initiative
The resolution received support from major countries including France and the United Kingdom.
French officials also welcomed efforts to address what they regard as long-standing distortions in global cartographic representation. The broad voting support indicates that the issue has gained international momentum beyond Africa.
Will the Mercator Map Disappear Completely?
No.
This is one of the most important points about the UN decision.
The resolution is not legally binding. It does not prohibit governments, companies or individuals from using the Mercator projection.
Mercator will continue to have important applications, particularly in maritime and aviation navigation, where its ability to preserve angles and directions remains valuable.
Instead, the UN resolution encourages governments, educational institutions, international organisations and technology companies to consider more accurate equal-area projections for situations where showing relative land size is important.
What Could Change in Schools and Digital Maps?
One of the most visible effects could be in education.
Togo has said it intends to update its school geography materials to use the newer projection by the end of 2026 and hopes other countries will follow.
If more schools adopt Equal Earth or similar projections, future generations may grow up with a visual understanding of the world’s continents that is closer to their actual relative areas.
Digital mapping platforms could also offer or expand the use of alternative projections depending on the purpose of the map.
The Real Message Behind the ‘New Map’
The Earth itself has not changed.
Africa has not suddenly become bigger. India has not moved. Europe has not become smaller.
What has changed is the lens through which the world is represented on a flat surface.
For centuries, the Mercator projection served an important navigational purpose. But because it enlarges areas closer to the poles and reduces the apparent scale of equatorial regions, critics say it has also shaped people’s perception of the relative size of continents.
The Equal Earth projection attempts to correct that imbalance by giving greater importance to actual relative land area.

The UN’s decision is less about replacing one map overnight and more about encouraging a more accurate way of representing the world’s geography.
With 164 countries backing the resolution, the Equal Earth projection has received a major international endorsement. However, the Mercator projection is not banned and will continue to be useful, particularly for navigation.
For India, there is no change in geography, borders or territory. The change is simply in how the country—and the rest of the world—is visually represented on a map.
The world has not changed. The way we draw it is changing.
