Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to Visit Canada and US from August 25 to September 2

Visit to focus on India-Canada Economic Dialogue, G20 Finance Ministers’ Meeting and global investor engagements

New Delhi : Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman will undertake an official visit to Canada and the United States from August 25 to September 2, 2026.

The visit is aimed at strengthening India’s bilateral economic and financial partnerships, expanding investment opportunities and advancing cooperation on key global economic issues.

Canada Visit: Economic and Financial Dialogue

During her visit to Toronto, Sitharaman will participate in the inaugural India-Canada Economic and Financial Dialogue with Canada’s Minister of Finance and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne.

The dialogue is expected to focus on several areas, including:

  • Macroeconomic developments
  • Financial-sector cooperation
  • Bilateral investment opportunities
  • Global economic priorities
  • Energy and critical minerals
  • Technology and innovation
  • Resilient supply chains
  • Progress towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA)

The Finance Minister is also scheduled to engage with senior executives and investors from Canada’s business and financial sectors.

Key engagements in Canada

Her programme in Toronto will include:

  • Investment Roundtable with CEOs from the energy, artificial intelligence and critical-minerals sectors
  • Business Roundtable on India-Canada economic cooperation
  • Fireside conversation with Canada’s Finance Minister
  • One-to-one meetings with senior business leaders
  • Interaction with the Indian community in Toronto

These engagements are expected to provide an opportunity to explore new investment partnerships and strengthen India’s economic engagement with Canada.

US Visit from August 28 to September 2

Following her Canada visit, Sitharaman will travel to the United States, where she is scheduled to visit Chicago, Asheville and New York.

Chicago: Investor and Business Engagements

In Chicago, the Finance Minister will hold discussions with institutional investors and private-sector leaders.

Her programme will include:

  • Investor roundtable discussions
  • Meetings with CEOs and senior business executives
  • Engagements with private-sector leaders
  • Visit to the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago
  • Interaction with the Indian community in Chicago

The discussions are expected to focus on India’s investment opportunities and its expanding economic and innovation ecosystem.

G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting

One of the most important components of the US visit will be Sitharaman’s participation in the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting.

The meeting will be held in Asheville on August 31 and September 1, 2026, under the US G20 Presidency.

Sitharaman will lead the Indian delegation at the meeting, where finance ministers and central bank governors from G20 economies will discuss major issues affecting the global economy.

The meeting provides India an important platform to contribute to discussions on international economic cooperation and global financial priorities.

New York: Investor Outreach and NASDAQ Engagement

The final leg of the visit will take place in New York.

During her stay, Sitharaman is scheduled to:

  • Participate in an Investor Roundtable
  • Meet senior executives from the financial sector
  • Hold discussions with global business leaders
  • Participate in a bell-ringing ceremony at NASDAQ

The engagements are expected to further strengthen India’s relationship with international investors and financial institutions.

The visit will also give India an opportunity to articulate its priorities on global economic and financial issues through the G20 platform.
