Mumbai : Western Railway’s Mumbai Central Division has introduced a new onboard lifestyle magazine, titled “Track & Trend,” for passengers traveling on Train Nos. 12009/12010 Mumbai Central–Ahmedabad–Mumbai Central Shatabdi Express. The initiative is aimed at enhancing the overall travel experience while also generating non-fare revenue for the railway.
The magazine was formally inaugurated by Shri Tarun Jain, Principal Chief Commercial Manager, Western Railway, in the presence of Shri Adish Pathania, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Mumbai Central Division, along with other senior railway officials and representatives.
According to a press release issued by Shri Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Railway, the “Track & Trend” magazine will be provided free of cost to passengers onboard the Shatabdi Express throughout their journey.
The publication features a wide range of engaging and informative content, including articles on lifestyle, travel, health, culture, entertainment, tourism, and leisure, offering passengers an enjoyable reading experience during their trip. The initiative reflects Western Railway’s commitment to improving passenger amenities and making long-distance travel more comfortable and informative.
Three-Year Contract to Generate Non-Fare Revenue
To implement the project, Western Railway has awarded a three-year distribution contract to M/s Insta Outdoor, Surat. The contract is expected to generate approximately ₹22 lakh in non-fare revenue over its duration, supporting the railway’s broader strategy of creating additional income streams without increasing passenger fares.
The July 2026 edition marks the first official issue of “Track & Trend” under the newly awarded contract. Railway officials believe the magazine will not only entertain passengers but also provide valuable travel-related information while promoting tourism, wellness, and cultural awareness.
The initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernize passenger services, improve customer satisfaction, and explore innovative revenue-generation opportunities beyond ticket sales.
International Perspective
Commenting on the initiative, David Thompson, an American transportation and passenger experience consultant, said:
“Providing complimentary onboard reading material is an excellent way to enhance the travel experience. It keeps passengers engaged while creating new opportunities for partnerships and advertising revenue.“
Meanwhile, Jennifer Brooks, a U.S.-based travel industry analyst, remarked:
“Lifestyle magazines on premium trains are a common feature in many countries. Western Railway’s initiative demonstrates how passenger comfort and commercial innovation can successfully go hand in hand.“
