SAIL Commissions Its First-Ever Micro Pellet Plant at Rourkela Steel Plant, Boosting Sustainable Steelmaking

Rourkela : Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has marked a significant milestone in its journey towards sustainable steel production with the commissioning of its first-ever Micro Pellet Plant at the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in Odisha. The state-of-the-art facility, with an annual production capacity of 0.18 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA), has been commissioned ahead of schedule, underscoring SAIL’s commitment to innovation, resource efficiency, and environmentally responsible manufacturing.

The new facility is designed to convert steelmaking waste fines into value-added micro pellets, which will be utilized in the sinter plants of Rourkela Steel Plant, reducing waste while enhancing raw material efficiency.

A Major Step Towards Circular Economy

The commissioning of the Micro Pellet Plant represents a major advancement in SAIL’s efforts to adopt circular economy practices within its steel manufacturing operations.

Instead of disposing of valuable iron-bearing waste generated during steel production, the plant will recover and recycle these materials into useful feedstock for steelmaking.

The initiative not only minimizes industrial waste but also contributes to more sustainable utilization of natural resources by reducing dependence on virgin raw materials.

Converting Waste into Valuable Resources

The newly commissioned plant is capable of processing a variety of steelmaking waste materials, including:

  • Steel Melting Shop (SMS) sludge
  • Blast Furnace sludge
  • Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) dust
  • Bag filter dust
  • Other micron-sized iron-bearing fines

These by-products, which were traditionally difficult to utilize efficiently, will now be converted into micro pellets measuring 1–6 millimetres through a specialized agglomeration process.

The resulting pellets will serve as an important raw material for the sinter plants at Rourkela Steel Plant, supporting efficient iron-making operations.

Improving Resource Efficiency

The innovative recycling process enables the recovery of several valuable constituents present in steelmaking waste, including:

  • Iron (Fe)
  • Calcium Oxide (CaO)
  • Magnesium Oxide (MgO)

By recovering these materials, SAIL can significantly reduce the requirement for fresh raw materials, resulting in:
