Power Grid Corporation of India Limited Approves ₹584 Crore Investment for Grid Expansion and Digital Communication Projects


New Delhi, India : India’s largest power transmission utility, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), has approved investments worth ₹584.13 crore (approximately $70 million) for three strategic transmission and communication infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening the country’s electricity network and digital grid capabilities.

The approvals were granted by the company’s “Committee of Directors on Investment on Projects” during a meeting held on May 15, 2026, according to a regulatory filing submitted to stock exchanges under SEBI Regulation 30.

The projects include a major substation augmentation in southern India and two large-scale Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) communication network schemes in the Western and Eastern regions of the country.


Major Projects Approved by POWERGRID

1. Tuticorin-II GIS Substation Expansion in Tamil Nadu

The largest transmission-related upgrade approved under the package is the augmentation of the Tuticorin-II Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

The project involves the installation of an additional 1×500 MVA, 400/230kV Interconnecting Transformer (ICT) — the seventh ICT unit at the facility.

  • Project Cost: ₹132.06 crore
  • Expected Completion Date: February 17, 2028

The expansion is expected to significantly enhance power transformation capacity in the region, which has witnessed growing industrial activity and rapid renewable energy development, particularly in wind and solar generation.

Tuticorin, a major industrial and port city in Tamil Nadu, has emerged as a key energy hub in southern India. The additional transformer capacity is expected to improve grid reliability, reduce transmission bottlenecks, and support increasing electricity demand from industries and renewable energy producers.


Massive Push Toward Smart Grid Communication Infrastructure

2. OPGW Communication System in Western Region

POWERGRID also approved a large-scale deployment of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) and associated communication systems across existing Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) lines in India’s Western Region.

  • Project Cost: ₹308.49 crore
  • Completion Timeline: Within 30 months from project allocation
  • Target Completion Date: September 18, 2028

The Western Region includes key industrial and high-demand states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

OPGW technology integrates fiber-optic communication cables with overhead power transmission lines, enabling secure and high-speed data transmission for grid operations.

The communication backbone supports:

  • Real-time grid monitoring
  • Faster fault detection and isolation
  • Remote substation operations
  • Grid automation and protection systems
  • Enhanced cybersecurity for transmission infrastructure

Industry experts believe the expansion of OPGW networks is essential for modernizing India’s electricity grid and transitioning toward a digitally managed “smart grid” ecosystem.


3. OPGW Communication Scheme for Eastern Region

In a parallel initiative, POWERGRID approved another OPGW-based communication project for the Eastern Region transmission network.

  • Project Cost: ₹143.58 crore
  • Expected Completion Date: September 18, 2028

The Eastern Region covers states rich in coal, mining, and thermal power generation, including Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, and parts of the Northeast.

The project aims to improve operational coordination, communication reliability, and data transfer capabilities across transmission corridors in eastern India.

Together, the two OPGW projects account for a combined investment of ₹452.07 crore, reflecting POWERGRID’s intensified focus on digitalizing India’s power transmission network.


Strategic Importance of the Investments

The newly approved projects are expected to play a crucial role in strengthening India’s national grid infrastructure at a time when electricity demand is rising rapidly due to industrial growth, urbanization, and renewable energy integration.

Supporting Renewable Energy Expansion

India has aggressively expanded its renewable energy capacity in recent years, particularly in solar and wind sectors. However, integrating intermittent renewable energy into the national grid requires advanced communication and monitoring systems.

The new OPGW networks will enable:

  • Faster balancing of renewable power flows
  • Improved load forecasting
  • Real-time operational control
  • Better grid stability during peak demand periods

Enhancing National Grid Reliability

The Tuticorin-II transformer expansion and communication upgrades are also expected to improve voltage stability and reduce congestion across regional transmission systems.

In its official filing to the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE Limited, the company confirmed that the investment approvals align with its long-term mandate of building a robust and resilient national transmission network.

The filing, signed by Company Secretary and Compliance Officer Satyaprakash Dash, stated:

“The Committee of Directors on Investment on Projects, in its meeting held today i.e. 15th May, 2026, has accorded investment approval for following proposals.”

POWERGRID remains one of India’s most significant public sector infrastructure companies and plays a central role in interstate electricity transmission.

While capital expenditure approvals are a routine part of the utility’s operations, analysts view the dual OPGW projects as a strong indicator of the company’s increasing emphasis on digital infrastructure and smart transmission technologies.
