Mungeli — A major controversy has erupted in the municipal area of Mungeli after several dead cows were allegedly found dumped at a garbage disposal site instead of being given a proper and respectful burial or cremation. The incident has triggered widespread anger among residents, cow protection activists, and religious groups across the town.
According to local reports, nearly a dozen carcasses of cows were allegedly transported and discarded at the municipal dumping ground, where city waste is routinely collected. The situation became even more disturbing after portions of the garbage site reportedly caught fire, leaving several animal remains partially burned. Witnesses also claimed that birds were seen feeding on the exposed carcasses, creating a deeply disturbing scene that shocked onlookers.
As news of the incident spread, a large number of residents and members of local cow welfare organizations gathered at the site and protested against the functioning of the municipal administration. Protesters accused the civic body of negligence and insensitivity, stating that cows hold a sacred place in Hindu culture and deserve dignified treatment even after death.
Cow Welfare Groups Accuse Municipal Council of Negligence
Members associated with local cow protection groups alleged that the Municipal Council failed to follow standard procedures for disposing of dead animals. Activists said that in earlier cases, deceased cattle were usually buried in pits with proper sanitary measures, but in this instance, neither civic protocols nor basic humanitarian considerations appeared to have been followed.
Cow welfare workers demanded that the administration establish a scientific and respectful system for handling animal deaths within the town limits. They also called for an independent investigation and strict action against any officials or workers found responsible.

Reacting strongly to the incident, Nanu Thakur, associated with a local cow welfare organization, criticized the authorities for what he described as inhumane treatment of sacred animals.
He stated that the cows were neither buried nor cremated and were simply thrown away like garbage. He further remarked that such visuals were unacceptable in a place that claims to value cow protection and religious traditions.
Thakur also questioned the civic administration’s priorities, alleging that large sums of public money were being spent on beautification projects, river cleaning drives, swimming pools, and recreational infrastructure, while adequate arrangements for cow care, protection, and dignified disposal of carcasses remained absent.
He warned that if appropriate action was not taken soon, members of the cow welfare community could launch a large-scale protest movement.
Municipal Chief Officer Orders Investigation
Responding to the growing controversy, Chief Municipal Officer (CMO) Ankur Pandey stated that municipal teams had been dispatched to the site immediately after the matter came to light.
Pandey assured residents that the dead cows would now be given a proper and respectful final disposal in accordance with civic procedures. He also confirmed that an official investigation had been ordered and that strict action would be taken against anyone found guilty of negligence.
At the same time, the CMO suggested that authorities were also examining whether the incident may have been deliberately staged to defame the Municipal Council. He said this angle would also be included in the investigation process.
Public Anger Continues to Grow
The incident has now become a major topic of discussion across Mungeli, with many residents questioning the efficiency and accountability of the local civic administration.
Citizens argue that if even the dignified disposal of dead animals cannot be managed properly, it raises serious concerns about municipal governance and public sanitation systems. The administration’s next steps and the outcome of the investigation are now being closely watched by the public as pressure mounts for accountability and reform.
