NTPC Floats EPC Tender for 108 MW Great Nicobar Gas Power Project with Hydrogen-Ready Technology

New Delhi  NTPC Limited, India’s largest power generation company, has invited bids for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) package of the proposed 108 MW Great Nicobar Island Gas Engine Power Project, marking a significant step toward strengthening energy infrastructure in one of the country’s most strategically important island regions.

The upcoming power facility is designed to meet the growing electricity demand of Great Nicobar Island while incorporating advanced technologies that support India’s long-term transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

Hydrogen-Ready Power Generation Facility

One of the most notable features of the project is its hydrogen-compatible design. According to the tender specifications, the gas engines installed at the plant must be capable of operating with 20โ€“25% hydrogen blending by volume alongside conventional fuel.

The plant is expected to primarily utilize Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) throughout its operational life. However, the ability to integrate hydrogen into the fuel mix demonstrates NTPC’s commitment to adopting future-ready technologies and supporting the nation’s broader clean energy transition goals.

By incorporating hydrogen-ready infrastructure at the design stage, the project aims to reduce future retrofit requirements and create a pathway for lower-carbon power generation.

Single-Point Responsibility EPC Contract

The project will be executed on a single-point responsibility EPC basis, meaning the selected contractor will be responsible for the complete lifecycle of project implementation, including:

  • Design and engineering
  • Procurement and supply of equipment
  • Construction and installation
  • Testing and commissioning
  • Performance validation and demonstration

The EPC contractor will also be responsible for ensuring seamless integration of all plant systems and associated infrastructure.

Comprehensive Scope of Work

The tender covers a broad range of infrastructure and equipment required for the successful operation of the power station.

Major components include:

  • Gas engine generator units
  • Cooling and heat management systems
  • Electrical control and monitoring systems
  • Transformers and switchgear
  • Power evacuation infrastructure
  • Rooftop solar installations
  • Fire protection and safety systems
  • Auxiliary and support facilities

In addition, the scope includes extensive civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, and electrical works, ensuring the development of a fully integrated power generation facility.

Advanced Grid and Plant Infrastructure

As part of the project, NTPC plans to install a modern 132/33 kV Indoor Gas-Insulated Substation (GIS), which will help improve operational reliability and optimize space utilization.

Other planned facilities include:

  • Compressed air systems
  • Battery backup systems
  • Station lighting infrastructure
  • Power cable networks
  • Ventilation and air-conditioning systems
  • Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS)

These systems are intended to enhance plant efficiency, operational safety, and environmental compliance.

Strong Focus on Environmental Compliance

Environmental sustainability remains a key component of the project. The facility will be equipped with advanced Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) control systems and continuous emissions monitoring technology to ensure adherence to prescribed environmental standards.

The incorporation of hydrogen blending capability and emissions control mechanisms aligns with India’s efforts to balance energy security with environmental responsibility.

Post-Commissioning Support Requirement

Beyond construction and commissioning, the selected EPC contractor will be required to provide one year of operation and maintenance supervision after successful completion of performance guarantee testing.

This provision is intended to ensure smooth plant operations, knowledge transfer, and system reliability during the initial operational phase.
