Hyderabad, India | Zoho Corporation’s messaging and VoIP application Arattai has launched a new Aadhaar-based identity verification feature aimed at improving user trust, reducing impersonation, and strengthening protection against fake accounts and spam. The company announced that the feature is completely optional, allowing users to decide whether they want to verify their identity.
The new verification system enables users to confirm their identity directly through the Aadhaar app. Once the verification process is successfully completed, users receive a permanent Green Verification Badge, making it easier for others to identify authentic and trusted profiles on the platform.
How the Verification Works
Users can access the feature by navigating to Profile Settings and selecting the “Get Verified” option. The verification is completed through the Aadhaar authentication process, after which the account is permanently marked with the green badge.
According to the company, the feature is available across Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac platforms, ensuring a consistent verification experience for users regardless of the device they use.
Enhanced Spam Protection
One of the key benefits of the new verification system is improved spam control. Users can now choose to receive messages only from verified profiles, effectively blocking communication from unverified accounts if they wish.
This feature is expected to significantly reduce spam messages, fake profiles, and identity impersonation, creating a safer messaging environment.
Zoho Emphasizes Privacy
Jerry John, Global Product Head of Arattai, stated that the Aadhaar verification layer has been introduced to build a trusted communication ecosystem without affecting the overall user experience.
He emphasized that:
- Identity verification is entirely voluntary.
- Arattai does not store users’ Aadhaar data.
- Users remain in complete control of whether they choose to verify their identity.
The company said the initiative is designed to enable secure peer-to-peer communication while maintaining strong privacy standards.
Existing Verification System Remains
Arattai already operates a verification program that distinguishes different categories of users:
- Blue Badge – Verified standard user profiles.
- Grey Badge – Verified government organizations and official government accounts.
- Green Badge – Newly introduced permanent badge for users completing Aadhaar-based identity verification.
This multi-level verification system aims to reduce impersonation of both individuals and government institutions.
Privacy-Focused Messaging Platform
Originally launched in 2021, Arattai was developed entirely in India and has been positioned as a privacy-first messaging platform. Unlike many messaging services, the company says the platform does not rely on data tracking, targeted advertising, or user surveillance.
The app currently supports 10 Indian languages, including:
- Hindi
- Gujarati
- Odia
- Tamil
- Along with several other regional languages.
Additional Security Features
Alongside Aadhaar verification, Arattai has also rolled out several new privacy and security enhancements, including:
- End-to-End Encryption for personal chats and broadcasts.
- Encrypted Cloud Chat Backups for Google Drive and iCloud.
- Hide Phone Number feature that conceals users’ mobile numbers in public groups.
- Enhanced tools to improve account security and protect user privacy.
Focus on Trust and Digital Safety
With increasing concerns over online identity fraud, spam accounts, and digital impersonation, Arattai’s optional Aadhaar verification represents an effort to enhance trust while preserving user privacy.
By combining voluntary identity verification, privacy-focused architecture, and advanced security features, Zoho aims to create a more secure communication platform without compromising users’ control over their personal information.
