New Delhi / Bongaigaon, India |In observance of Earth Day, NTPC Limited’s Bongaigaon unit organized a plantation drive, underscoring its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. The initiative was held under this year’s global theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlighting the role of collective action in protecting ecosystems and combating climate change.
The drive was inaugurated by Arnab Maitra, Head of Project at NTPC Bongaigaon, who planted saplings in the presence of senior officials and employees from multiple departments. The event was coordinated by the plant’s Environment Management Group (EMG), which plays a key role in implementing green initiatives across operations.
Focus on Native and Fruit-Bearing Trees
As part of the campaign, more than 30 saplings were planted across the township and plant premises. The selection included native and fruit-bearing species, aimed at enhancing local biodiversity, improving air quality, and contributing to long-term ecological balance.
The plantation activity also served as a hands-on demonstration of NTPC’s broader environmental strategy, which integrates sustainability into day-to-day operations at its facilities across India.
Leadership Emphasizes Shared Responsibility
Addressing participants during the event, Maitra emphasized the urgency of environmental conservation and the importance of individual and collective responsibility in tackling climate change.
“Protecting our environment is not just an institutional priority but a shared duty. Small actions, when multiplied across communities, can create meaningful impact,” he said.
He also commended the EMG team for organizing the initiative and encouraged employees to incorporate eco-friendly practices into their daily routines—both at work and at home.
Aligning with National Sustainability Goals
NTPC, India’s largest power producer, has been increasingly focusing on sustainability by expanding its renewable energy portfolio and adopting greener operational practices. Events like the Earth Day plantation drive reflect the company’s ongoing efforts to balance energy production with environmental responsibility.
Community Engagement and Long-Term Impact
Beyond its immediate environmental benefits, the initiative also fosters awareness and engagement among employees and local communities. By promoting tree plantation and sustainable habits, NTPC aims to contribute to a greener future while supporting India’s broader climate and sustainability goals.
