Kolkata, India: In a significant step towards sustainable coal transportation and green logistics, Coal India Limited (CIL) organized a high-level seminar on “Transitioning Coal Logistics” at its corporate headquarters in Kolkata. The event brought together senior company officials, representatives from the Ministry of Heavy Industries, and leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers to discuss the future of coal transportation through electric mobility.
Addressing the seminar, Coal India Chairman Shri B. Sairam emphasized that “the future lies in e-mobility,” highlighting the growing importance of electric vehicles (EVs) in addressing global energy challenges. He stated that the transition to EV-based logistics is no longer optional but essential in the face of changing energy demands and environmental concerns.
The Chairman reaffirmed Coal India’s commitment to supporting all stakeholders in the transition toward clean, efficient, and environmentally responsible logistics solutions. He noted that the company aims to remain at the forefront of innovation by promoting the adoption of electric transportation systems across its coal supply chain.
Speaking at the seminar, Director (Technical) Shri Achyut Ghatak described the shift to electric vehicles as both a sustainability necessity and a business imperative. He explained that adopting EVs in coal logistics would not only reduce carbon emissions but also improve operational efficiency, lower fuel costs, and contribute to India’s long-term net-zero and clean energy goals.
He further reiterated that Coal India is dedicated to implementing eco-friendly operational practices while ensuring reliable coal transportation to power plants and industrial consumers across the country.
The seminar witnessed active participation from senior officials of Coal India, policymakers from the Ministry of Heavy Industries, and executives from the electric vehicle manufacturing industry. Participants exchanged ideas on the development of EV infrastructure, battery technology, charging networks, and policy support required for accelerating the adoption of electric mobility in heavy-duty logistics.
Industry experts highlighted that replacing conventional diesel-powered vehicles with electric trucks and transport systems could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and strengthen India’s commitment to sustainable industrial development.
With this initiative, Coal India Limited has reaffirmed its vision of building a modern, cleaner, and technology-driven coal logistics ecosystem, aligning with the Government of India’s broader mission to promote green mobility, energy security, and environmental sustainability.
