Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh: Rajnandgaon Superintendent of Police (SP) Ankita Sharma has been asked to explain her reported aerial firing with an AK-47 rifle during Dussehra celebrations, after a video of the incident circulated on social media. The matter has reached the Chhattisgarh Police Headquarters, and further action will depend on the explanation submitted by the officer and the departmentโs review.
The incident reportedly took place during the traditional weapons worship ceremony observed on Vijayadashami. A video showing Sharma firing the weapon into the air subsequently went viral, triggering questions about police protocol and the conduct expected of senior officers.
IG Ajay Yadav Confirms Notice
Rajnandgaon Range Inspector General of Police Ajay Yadav confirmed that the matter had been brought to the attention of the Police Headquarters and that an explanation had been sought from the SP.
According to Yadav, the department took cognisance of the video circulating on social media. He said the explanation would be forwarded to the Police Headquarters after it was received, following which further action would be decided.

While weapons worship is traditionally performed during Dussehra in several parts of the country, the incident has brought attention to the distinction between the religious observance and the responsibilities associated with the public conduct of a senior police official.
The matter has also drawn reactions on social media, where users have expressed differing views on the incident.
Further Action Awaited
With the matter now before the Police Headquarters, attention has turned to the explanation sought from SP Ankita Sharma and the decision that senior officials may take after examining it.
