Kremlin says Putin and Modi will discuss bilateral ties, global issues and the current situation in the Ukraine conflict during their meeting
Moscow/New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit New Delhi on September 11 to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Kremlin said on Tuesday.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the two leaders are expected to discuss a wide range of issues concerning bilateral relations as well as major developments on the global agenda. He added that Putin would brief Prime Minister Modi on the latest situation in the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking from Moscow during a virtual briefing organised by Sputnik India, Peskov highlighted the close relationship between India and Russia and described interactions between Putin and Modi as practical and candid.
According to Peskov, the two leaders regularly discuss sensitive issues concerning bilateral relations and the global agenda in an open and constructive manner.
Putin-Modi Meeting Scheduled for September 11
Peskov confirmed that Putin’s bilateral meeting with Modi is scheduled for Friday, September 11.
He said the discussions would cover the bilateral agenda, particularly the broad scope of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
Peskov also indicated that some aspects of India-Russia cooperation may be discussed privately, given what Moscow considers attempts by certain countries to create obstacles to further bilateral cooperation.
He said the two leaders are expected to discuss major ongoing projects and India’s growing interest in investing in different sectors of the Russian economy.
According to the Kremlin spokesperson, Russia welcomes the interest shown by Indian companies in the Russian market and in expanding investments across various sectors.
At the same time, he said Russia remains committed to increasing its presence in the Indian market.
Ukraine Conflict to Be Part of Discussions
The situation surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict is also expected to feature prominently in the meeting.
Peskov said Putin would use the opportunity to brief Modi about the latest situation on the ground and exchange views with the Indian Prime Minister on international developments.
India has maintained regular diplomatic engagement with both Moscow and Kyiv while advocating dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict.
The Putin-Modi meeting is therefore expected to provide another opportunity for the two leaders to discuss the evolving geopolitical situation and its implications for bilateral relations.
West Asia Crisis and Global Economy
The Kremlin also highlighted the impact of the situation in the Persian Gulf and West Asia on the global economy.
Peskov said disruptions in the region were having a significant negative impact on global energy markets and supply chains.
He claimed that the crisis had affected a substantial portion of global oil and natural gas supplies, with consequences being felt by economies around the world, including India and Russia.
According to Peskov, the economic impact of the situation in the Gulf would also form part of the discussions between Putin and Modi.
Transport Projects Also on the Agenda
Apart from trade and investment, the two leaders are expected to discuss the status of certain international transport projects.
Peskov said transport cooperation and the progress of major international projects would be among the issues discussed during the bilateral meeting.
The discussion is expected to cover areas where India and Russia are seeking to strengthen connectivity and economic cooperation.
India to Host 18th BRICS Summit
India, which holds the BRICS chairmanship for 2026, will host the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12-13.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, leaders from BRICS member countries, partner countries and invited outreach participants are expected to attend the summit.
During the summit, participating leaders will exchange views on shared priorities, ways to strengthen cooperation within BRICS and issues of mutual interest at the regional and global levels.
The summit comes at a time when geopolitical tensions, energy security, trade, investment and changes in the global economic order remain key concerns for emerging economies.
Modi Had Invited Putin at SCO Summit
The upcoming visit follows a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Putin on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, last month.
During that meeting, Modi invited Putin to attend the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
Putin’s visit will provide another opportunity for the two leaders to review the India-Russia strategic partnership and discuss new areas of cooperation.
