Attempted Rape of MBA Student in Bhubaneswar: 67-Year-Old Shopkeeper Arrested


Bhubaneswar, Odisha: In a disturbing incident that has once again raised concerns about women’s safety, a 67-year-old shopkeeper has been arrested for allegedly attempting to rape an MBA student from Chhattisgarh in Bhubaneswar.

According to police reports, the incident took place in the Gangapada area under the jurisdiction of the Infovalley Police Station. The accused, identified as Deepak Chandra Pradhan (67), is a local grocery shop owner who allegedly took advantage of the victim being alone at her rented accommodation.

Incident Details

The victim, a resident of Chhattisgarh, is currently pursuing her MBA from a private college in Bhubaneswar. She lives in a rented house with her classmates. Police stated that on the night of April 24, the victim was alone at home as her roommates were away.

Taking advantage of the situation, the accused allegedly scaled the boundary wall and entered the house during the night. He then attempted to sexually assault the woman while she was asleep. However, the victim woke up and raised an alarm. Her screams alerted nearby residents, who rushed to the spot, forcing the accused to flee.

Arrest and Legal Action

Following the victim’s complaint, the Infovalley Police registered a case under Sections 64(1) and 62 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Acting swiftly, the police arrested the accused on Sunday.

The accused was subsequently produced before a local court. His bail plea was rejected, and he has been remanded to judicial custody.

Police Statement

A police officer from Infovalley Police Station stated that the accused had been observing the victim for some time, as she occasionally visited his shop. Preliminary investigations suggest premeditated intent, as he targeted a time when the victim was alone.

This incident has sparked fresh concerns over the safety of women, particularly students living away from home in urban areas. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and ensure proper security measures in rented accommodations.
