New Delhi : The 18th day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session witnessed continued disruptions as opposition MPs raised various issues, leading to the Lok Sabha being adjourned until 2 PM shortly after proceedings began.
The Monsoon Session is scheduled to have 19 sittings, but the government and opposition have continued to remain at odds over several issues.
Lok Sabha Adjourned Amid Opposition Uproar
The proceedings of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha began at around 11 AM. However, amid protests and slogans by opposition MPs, the Lok Sabha was adjourned until 2 PM.
The opposition has continued to raise issues including the alleged theft of offerings at the Ram Mandir and alleged police action against students during protests at Jantar Mantar.
Akhilesh Yadav Targets Government
Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav criticised the government over its proposed legislative measures and raised concerns over infrastructure and governance.
He alleged that the government was seeking to bring an FCRA Bill to suppress minorities and questioned the implementation of infrastructure projects, including airports and expressways.
Priyanka Gandhi Raises Questions Over Police Action
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questioned the government’s handling of student protests.
She alleged that students protesting for their demands had faced lathi-charges and pellet guns, and also raised allegations concerning the use of firearms against protesting students in Bihar.
She questioned whether the government was accountable to the public and said that the opposition could not simply remain silent.
BJP MPs Stage Protest
BJP MPs from Jharkhand also staged a protest in the Lok Sabha over alleged police action against protesting students in Jharkhand. They raised slogans against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
Key Bills on the Government’s Agenda
The government is expected to take up several important legislative matters during the session.
In the Rajya Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to introduce the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026. The proposed legislation seeks to change the name of the state from Kerala to Keralam in the First Schedule of the Constitution.
The proposal follows a resolution passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly in June 2024 seeking the change.
In the Lok Sabha, the government is scheduled to introduce the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, which seeks to amend the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.
Parliament Faces Continued Deadlock
With protests continuing on both sides, the 18th day of the Monsoon Session has once again highlighted the political confrontation between the government and opposition.
The key focus now remains on whether the two sides can reach consensus on legislative business and allow Parliament to function without repeated disruptions.
