Tokyo : Honda Motor Co. has raised its full-year financial forecasts after reporting a stronger-than-expected quarterly performance, with operating profit more than doubling during the April–June quarter. The impressive results were driven by a weaker Japanese yen and the absence of U.S. tariff-related costs that had significantly impacted earnings during the same period last year.
The latest earnings mark Honda’s first quarterly profit increase in six consecutive quarters, signaling a notable recovery for Japan’s second-largest automaker following a challenging year marked by major restructuring expenses.
Operating Profit More Than Doubles
For the April–June 2026 quarter, Honda reported an operating profit of 530.8 billion yen, compared with 244.2 billion yen recorded in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
The performance significantly exceeded market expectations, as analysts surveyed by LSEG had projected a median operating profit of 302.1 billion yen.
The strong earnings reflect improved operational performance, favorable foreign exchange movements, and reduced extraordinary expenses.
Full-Year Forecast Upgraded
Buoyed by the robust quarterly results, Honda revised its financial outlook for the current fiscal year.
The company increased its full-year operating profit forecast by 30%, raising the estimate from 500 billion yen to 650 billion yen (approximately US$4.1 billion).
In addition to improving its operating profit guidance, Honda also upgraded its:
- Net profit forecast
- Revenue outlook
The revised projections are based primarily on a more favorable exchange-rate assumption, with the weaker yen expected to continue supporting overseas earnings when converted into Japanese currency.
Weaker Yen Boosts Earnings
A significant contributor to Honda’s improved financial performance was the depreciation of the Japanese yen, which enhances the value of revenue generated in overseas markets when translated into yen.
As one of the world’s largest automobile exporters, Honda benefits from a weaker domestic currency because a substantial portion of its vehicle sales comes from international markets, particularly North America, Asia, and Europe.
The company also benefited from the absence of U.S. tariff-related costs that had adversely affected profitability during the previous year’s corresponding quarter.
Recovery After Challenging Year
The latest quarterly performance represents an important turnaround for Honda.
In May 2026, the company reported its first annual loss in nearly 70 years, largely due to more than US$9 billion in expenses associated with restructuring its electric vehicle (EV) business.
Those restructuring initiatives included investments in future technologies, operational realignment, and strategic adjustments aimed at strengthening Honda’s long-term competitiveness in the rapidly evolving electric mobility market.
The current quarterly results indicate that the company is beginning to recover from those one-time financial impacts.
Focus on Long-Term Growth
Despite the recent recovery, Honda continues to invest heavily in:
- Electric Vehicles (EVs)
- Hybrid technologies
- Battery development
- Software-defined vehicles
- Advanced mobility solutions
The company remains committed to strengthening its global product portfolio while improving operational efficiency and profitability.
Management expects continued demand across key international markets, supported by a balanced lineup of internal combustion, hybrid, and electric vehicles.
Positive Signal for Investors
Honda’s better-than-expected earnings and upgraded annual guidance have strengthened investor confidence in the company’s recovery strategy.
The combination of improved operating performance, favorable currency movements, and lower extraordinary costs has enabled the automaker to deliver its first quarterly profit growth in six quarters, suggesting that its restructuring efforts are beginning to produce tangible financial benefits.
With an improved earnings outlook and continued investments in next-generation mobility technologies, Honda Motor Co. appears well-positioned to navigate industry challenges while pursuing sustainable long-term growth in the increasingly competitive global automotive market.
