Coal India Reports Strong July Performance as Production Rises 8.4% and Offtake Surges 17.4%

Kolkata : Coal India Limited (CIL) has reported a robust operational performance for July 2026, registering healthy growth in both coal production and offtake, reflecting strong demand from key sectors, particularly the power industry. According to the company’s provisional operational data released under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015, coal production increased by 8.4%, while offtake recorded an impressive 17.4% year-on-year growth during the month.

The strong July performance highlights Coal India’s continued efforts to ensure adequate coal availability for power generation and industrial consumption while maintaining supply chain efficiency.

Coal Production Records Healthy Growth

During July 2026, Coal India produced 50.4 million tonnes (MT) of coal, compared with 46.4 million tonnes produced during July 2025, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 8.4%.

The increase in monthly production demonstrates the company’s focus on improving mine productivity and meeting the country’s growing energy requirements.

However, on a cumulative basis, April–July 2026 production stood at 220.0 million tonnes, compared to 229.8 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous financial year, representing a 4.3% decline.

Offtake Surges 17.4% in July

Coal dispatches, or offtake, witnessed even stronger growth during the month.

July 2026 offtake reached 63.7 million tonnes, compared to 54.2 million tonnes during July 2025, registering a significant 17.4% increase.

The strong rise in offtake indicates sustained demand from the power sector, steel producers, cement manufacturers, and other core industries that rely heavily on domestic coal supplies.

For the cumulative April–July 2026 period, total offtake stood at 261.9 million tonnes, reflecting a 6.8% growth over the corresponding period last year.

Meeting India’s Growing Energy Demand

As the country’s largest coal producer, Coal India Limited plays a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted fuel supplies for thermal power plants, which continue to contribute a major share of India’s electricity generation.

The strong monthly increase in production and dispatch is expected to support:

  • Improved fuel availability for power generation.
  • Stable coal supplies to core industries.
  • Enhanced energy security.
  • Better inventory levels at thermal power plants.

The company continues to focus on increasing operational efficiency while supporting India’s rapidly growing energy needs.

Operational Outlook

While cumulative production during the first four months of the financial year remains slightly below last year’s level, the robust performance in July 2026 suggests positive operational momentum. The higher offtake figures also indicate strong market demand and efficient logistics management.

Coal India is expected to maintain its production focus during the remaining months of the financial year to meet annual output targets and ensure sufficient coal availability across sectors.
