Bhilai, Chhattisgarh |The Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), a flagship unit of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has officially launched the three-day “Quality-2026” Workplace Management Project Competition to strengthen its quality culture, encourage innovation, and promote continuous improvement across its operations. The event, organized by the Business Excellence Department, is being held from July 27 to July 29, 2026, at the Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC).
The competition was inaugurated by Pawan Kumar, Executive Director (Human Resources), in the presence of Bijay Kumar Behera, Chief General Manager In-Charge (Maintenance & Utilities), who attended as the Guest of Honor. The opening ceremony witnessed the participation of senior executives, department heads, officers, employees, members of the Officers’ Association, and competing teams from various departments of the steel plant.
Welcoming the participants, Shiv Rajan, General Manager (Business Excellence), highlighted the growing importance of the competition in fostering creative thinking, innovation, and problem-solving skills among employees. He noted that the event has become an effective platform for developing practical solutions that improve workplace efficiency and operational performance.
A unique cultural touch was added to the inauguration when Jitendra Das Manikpuri, Deputy Manager (Public Relations Administration & Official Language), presented a poem dedicated to the Quality Circle movement, emphasizing the values of teamwork and continuous improvement.
This year’s edition features 48 teams representing different departments of the Bhilai Steel Plant. Participants are competing in three major categories:
- Quality Circles (QC)
- Lean Quality Circles (LQC)
- 5S Workplace Management
The competition is divided into five separate streams, including three Plant-Level Quality Circle competitions, one Lean Quality Circle competition, and one 5S competition. The best-performing teams will earn the opportunity to represent Bhilai Steel Plant at various chapter-level conventions organized by the Quality Circle Forum of India (QCFI).
Addressing the gathering, Executive Director Pawan Kumar expressed confidence that the competition would generate innovative, practical, and sustainable solutions capable of enhancing the plant’s productivity, operational efficiency, and product quality. He also stressed the importance of expanding the quality culture by ensuring greater participation of contract workers, allowing their experience and innovative ideas to contribute to organizational growth.
Speaking on the occasion, Bijay Kumar Behera described Quality Circles as an effective mechanism for identifying departmental challenges and developing practical, long-term, and result-oriented solutions. He encouraged participants to present ideas that could address monsoon-related operational challenges, improve production capacity, and further strengthen the plant’s efficiency, productivity, and quality standards.
The successful organization of the event was supported by P. K. Sahu, Deputy General Manager (Business Excellence), along with officials and staff of the department. The event was conducted by Ravi Kumar, Senior Manager (Business Excellence), while the vote of thanks was delivered by Suraiyya S. Kadar, General Manager (Business Excellence).
During the three-day competition, teams from both works and non-works departments will present case studies, innovative workplace practices, and continuous improvement initiatives implemented in their respective areas. Their presentations will be evaluated by a panel of expert judges based on their effectiveness, innovation, and practical impact.
The Business Excellence Department of Bhilai Steel Plant organizes such plant-level competitions every year to strengthen quality management practices, encourage employee participation, and reinforce a culture of innovation, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across one of India’s largest integrated steel manufacturing facilities.
