Developed in collaboration with Work Louder, the programmable mechanical macropad is specifically designed to work with OpenAI’s Codex AI coding agent, helping developers monitor, manage, and interact with multiple AI agents more efficiently.
The launch comes as Codex approaches 9 million users worldwide, reflecting the growing adoption of AI-powered software development tools. The Codex Micro is priced at $230, making it a premium accessory aimed at professional developers and AI enthusiasts.
Unlike the highly anticipated AI hardware project associated with former Apple designer Jony Ive, the Codex Micro is not a standalone AI device. Instead, it serves as a dedicated programmable input device that streamlines AI-assisted coding and productivity workflows.
Designed for AI-Powered Development
The Codex Micro features six dedicated Agent Keys that display the real-time status of AI agents through illuminated color indicators. These keys allow developers to instantly identify what each AI agent is doing without opening additional software windows.
The color indicators include:
- White – AI agent is Idle
- Blue – Processing an active task
- Green – Task Completed
- Red – Error detected
A single press selects an assigned AI agent, while a double press immediately brings that agent into the foreground for quick interaction.
Advanced Controls for Faster Coding
Beyond the Agent Keys, the Codex Micro includes six fully programmable macro keys that are preconfigured for common Codex functions, including:
- Accepting code changes
- Rejecting code modifications
- Branching conversation threads
- Managing AI-generated workflows
The device also features a large Push-to-Talk button, allowing users to communicate directly with Codex using voice commands.
An integrated LED-lit acrylic edge glows whenever Codex is actively listening, providing a clear visual indication that the microphone is enabled.
Joystick and Rotary Dial Improve Navigation
The hardware includes a built-in joystick and rotary dial for faster workflow management.
By default, the joystick controls the Composer Bar inside Codex, while the rotary dial adjusts AI Reasoning levels without requiring users to open software settings. Developers can also use the joystick to launch workflows such as Pull Request Reviews and Code Refactoring.
Like every other control on the device, both components can be fully remapped for custom functions.
Highly Customizable Experience
OpenAI and Work Louder have designed the Codex Micro to be highly customizable.
Users can assign each Agent Key to:
- Pinned Codex tasks
- Recently used tasks
- Tasks awaiting human input
- Specific AI agents
Every key on the device is fully programmable, and users can replace the keycaps according to their preferences. Reports indicate that Work Louder includes 32 extra keycaps inside the box.
Buyers can also choose between Silent or Clicky mechanical switches, while connectivity options include both USB-C and Bluetooth.
Pricing Comparison
The Codex Micro carries a $230 price tag, making it more expensive than Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2, which starts at approximately $144. However, the new device offers several exclusive Codex-focused features, particularly the dedicated AI Agent Keys and deep integration with OpenAI’s AI coding platform.
