Baikunthpur, Chhattisgarh: Public outrage intensified in Baikunthpur on Thursday following the alleged suicide of a 17-year-old student, as hundreds of women, local residents, and social organizations staged a large-scale protest demanding swift justice and strict legal action against those accused in the case.
The protesters organized a road blockade (chakka jam), disrupting traffic while raising slogans against the administration and calling for immediate action. Authorities deployed a heavy police presence across the area to maintain law and order, and officials said the situation remained tense but under control throughout the demonstration.
Protesters Demand Maximum Punishment
During the protest, demonstrators described the student’s death as deeply tragic and urged authorities to ensure that anyone found guilty receives the strictest punishment under the law. Many protesters also demanded capital punishment for the accused, while others called for demolition of the commercial establishment (mart) whose name has reportedly surfaced during the investigation.
Women’s groups, local community members, and representatives of several social organizations joined the protest, saying they would continue their movement until they see concrete action from the authorities.
Family and Community Raise Serious Allegations
Speaking during the demonstration, local resident Ariyat Minj alleged that the victim’s family is devastated and demanded the harshest possible punishment for those responsible, including action against the business linked to the case.
Tribal leader Neera Singh also addressed the gathering, alleging that the victim’s father was asked to pay money. According to her, the family initially paid ₹20,000, after which an additional ₹50,000 was allegedly demanded. These allegations have been raised publicly by protesters, and authorities are investigating the matter.
Police Assure Fair Investigation
Police and district administration officials appealed to the public to maintain peace and allow the investigation to proceed. Security arrangements were strengthened to prevent any untoward incidents during the protest.
Officials stated that the student death case is being investigated seriously and thoroughly, and assured that appropriate legal action will be taken against anyone found responsible based on the evidence collected during the investigation.
Public Demand for Justice Continues
The incident has sparked widespread discussion across Baikunthpur and the Korea district, with citizens, traders, and community organizations expressing solidarity with the victim’s family. Protesters emphasized that they are seeking speedy justice to ensure accountability and to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
