Heavy Rain Causes Waterlogging in Dhamtari; Mayor Ramu Rohra Orders Immediate Action

DHAMTARI, Chhattisgarh: Continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days has led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas of Dhamtari, disrupting normal life and raising concerns among residents. In response, Mayor Ramu Rohra personally inspected the affected locations, reviewed the city’s drainage system, and directed municipal officials to take immediate corrective measures.

Despite the flooding in several neighborhoods, the Mayor maintained that there is no severe waterlogging anywhere in the city and that water is being drained from most affected areas.

Mayor Conducts On-Site Inspection

Accompanied by Deputy Commissioner P.C. Sarva, Municipal Engineer Mahendra Jagat, and other civic officials, Mayor Rohra visited several waterlogged areas to assess the situation firsthand.

The inspection focused on the condition of drainage channels, stormwater outlets, and locations vulnerable to flooding. Officials were instructed to speed up water drainage, divert water away from residential areas, and ensure that emergency response measures are implemented wherever necessary.

Several Localities Affected

Among the areas impacted by the heavy rainfall are Baniyapara, Rampur Ward, Gokulpur, Dabripara, Sorid, and Bathenapara, where roads were submerged under several feet of water, making movement difficult for residents and commuters.

Municipal teams have been deployed to continuously monitor these areas and prevent further deterioration of the situation.

Municipal Corporation Activates Emergency Measures

The Dhamtari Municipal Corporation has activated its Control Room to respond swiftly to rain-related emergencies.

According to the Mayor, water pumps have already been installed in Dabripara to remove accumulated water, while bamboo barricades are being placed around deep pits and hazardous locations to prevent accidents during the ongoing rainfall.

Officials have also been instructed to remain on standby and reach affected areas immediately whenever complaints are received.

Natural Water Flow Being Closely Monitored

Mayor Rohra explained that rainwater flowing from the Bhatgaon side is passing through Ama Talab and the Sorid Drain, and authorities are closely monitoring the water flow to ensure that both urban and nearby rural areas remain protected from flooding.

The municipal administration is keeping a constant watch on the drainage network to prevent overflow and ensure uninterrupted water discharge.

Long-Term Flood Mitigation Plan Underway

The Mayor also announced that the Municipal Corporation is preparing a long-term solution for flood-prone areas such as Baniyapara and Shiv Chowk, which have experienced recurring waterlogging during the monsoon season for several years.

The proposed plan aims to improve the city’s drainage infrastructure by ensuring that rainwater is efficiently directed into drains and ponds, reducing the risk of future flooding.

City on Alert Amid Forecast of More Rain

With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting the possibility of more heavy rainfall, the municipal administration has placed all concerned departments on high alert.

Mayor Rohra reiterated that, at present, no area in Dhamtari is experiencing prolonged water stagnation, but officials are maintaining continuous surveillance and are fully prepared to respond to any emergency caused by further rainfall.
