Five Massive Portal Beams Installed Over Active Railway Tracks in 22 Days for Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project


Ahmedabad : In a major engineering breakthrough for India’s high-speed rail ambitions, five massive portal beams—each weighing up to 1,360 metric tons—have been successfully installed over active railway tracks in Ahmedabad within just 22 days for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor.

The complex operation was carried out over the busy Indian Railways network along the Amdavad–Vadodara line at Maninagar, demonstrating exceptional precision, planning, and execution under live traffic conditions.


High-Precision Execution in Tight Timeline

The installation of the five precast-prestressed portal beams was completed in a carefully coordinated sequence on April 8, 13, 19, 24, and 29, 2026. Despite the challenges of working over operational railway lines, each beam was successfully placed with remarkable speed and accuracy.

The heaviest beam, weighing approximately 1,360 metric tons, was launched on April 8, marking one of the heaviest structural installations ever carried out over active railway tracks in India. The remaining beams ranged between 1,170 and 1,360 metric tons, underscoring the scale and complexity of the operation.


Engineering Challenges at Maninagar

The Maninagar section presented unique structural challenges. The bullet train alignment crosses existing railway lines at an elevated level with a skewed geometry, requiring advanced engineering solutions.

Additionally, the span between supporting piers—ranging from approximately 30 to 34 meters—necessitated the use of robust portal beams capable of handling heavy loads while maintaining structural stability.

These beams were specifically designed to span across multiple active railway lines, including UP, Down, and additional tracks on the Amdavad–Vadodara route. Their large size ensures minimal deflection and high rigidity, both critical for maintaining precise track alignment and ensuring uninterrupted rail operations below.


Advanced Technology and Equipment

The installation utilized a 2,200 metric ton crawler crane, marking the first time such heavy equipment has been deployed over active railway tracks in India. Each beam was installed in approximately 3.5 hours, a significant improvement over earlier operations that required up to nine-hour blocks.

The entire process was conducted in close coordination with Indian Railways authorities, ensuring minimal disruption to train services.


Design and Construction Details

Each portal beam is a precast concrete structure measuring about 34 meters in length, with a cross-section of 5.5 meters by 4.5 meters. These beams were cast on-site and erected as integrated heavy units, enhancing efficiency and reducing construction timelines.


Safety and Monitoring

Given the complexity of working above electrified railway lines with limited space, the operation involved stringent safety protocols, continuous monitoring, and meticulous planning. Challenges such as overhead electrification (OHE) systems and active train movement were managed without incident.


Strategic Importance

This milestone represents a significant step forward for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor, India’s first bullet train project, which aims to transform intercity travel with high-speed connectivity.

The successful and rapid installation of these massive structures highlights the project’s engineering capabilities and reinforces India’s growing expertise in executing large-scale, technologically advanced infrastructure projects.
