Mumbai — In a major push toward digital inclusion, Bank of Baroda has partnered with Reliance Jio to launch bob World Lite, a mobile banking application designed specifically for feature phone users. The app will debut on the JioPhone Prima 4G, marking what the companies describe as an industry-first initiative to extend full-scale digital banking services beyond smartphones.
The move aligns with the broader vision of the Government of India and the Reserve Bank of India to expand financial inclusion and make digital payments accessible to underserved populations, particularly in semi-urban and rural regions.
Bridging the Digital Divide
Unlike conventional banking apps that require smartphones and high-speed internet, bob World Lite is engineered for affordability and accessibility. It features a lightweight design, low-bandwidth usage, and keypad-based navigation—making it suitable for millions of Indians who still rely on feature phones.
The app allows users to:
- Make UPI-based payments, including Scan & Pay and fund transfers
- Pay utility bills and recharge mobile services
- Manage basic account settings and profiles
Additional features are expected to be rolled out in future updates.
Seamless Access and Onboarding
bob World Lite will come pre-installed on JioPhone Prima 4G devices and will be accessible directly from the home screen. Existing users of the device can download it via JioStore. Notably, the app is open not only to existing Bank of Baroda customers but also to customers of other banks through a simplified self-onboarding process.
Leadership Perspectives
Dr. Debadatta Chand, Managing Director and CEO of Bank of Baroda, emphasized the bank’s commitment to expanding digital access:
“Driving digital inclusion remains a core priority. With bob World Lite, we are extending secure and seamless banking services to feature phone users, helping bridge the digital divide while reaching a broader customer base.”
Dr. (Hon.) Sunil Dutt, President of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, highlighted Jio’s mission of digital democratization:
“Our partnership with Bank of Baroda is another step toward making digital services accessible to every Indian. We are enabling millions of users to access full-featured banking in a simple, secure, and affordable way.”
Expanding Financial Access Nationwide
By combining Jio’s vast digital infrastructure with Bank of Baroda’s extensive banking network, the initiative is expected to significantly broaden the reach of digital financial services across India. Analysts say this collaboration could play a crucial role in accelerating adoption of digital payments among feature phone users—an often overlooked but sizable segment of the population.
As India continues its transition toward a cashless economy, solutions like bob World Lite could help ensure that no segment of society is left behind.
