Raipur, India: Amid political controversy over alleged illegal opium cultivation in Chhattisgarh, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has taken a firm stance and directed district administrations to conduct a comprehensive survey to ensure that no illegal opium farming is taking place anywhere in the state.
The Chief Minister has instructed all district collectors to identify potential areas where illegal cultivation might occur and conduct detailed investigations. He has asked officials to submit a verified report within 15 days, confirming whether any such activities are happening in their respective districts.
Strict Instructions to District Collectors
According to officials, the state government wants to ensure that illegal opium cultivation is completely eliminated. Sai has clearly instructed administrators to verify ground conditions and provide a certificate confirming that no illegal opium cultivation exists in their districts.
Following the Chief Minister’s directions, the office of the Commissioner of Land Records has already issued a formal communication to all district collectors asking them to carry out the survey and submit the required reports.
“Zero Tolerance” Policy on Narcotics
Chief Minister Sai emphasized that the government is implementing a zero-tolerance policy against the production and trade of illegal narcotic substances.
He said any individual found involved in illegal cultivation or trafficking of narcotics would face strict legal action under relevant laws. The administration has been asked to remain vigilant and ensure that the state does not become a hub for illegal drug production.
Political Row Intensifies
The issue has also sparked a political confrontation between the ruling party and the opposition.
Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has accused the state government of allowing illegal opium cultivation to flourish and alleged that individuals linked to leaders of the ruling party were involved. Baghel claimed that the names of those responsible were not being revealed and said he possessed evidence related to the alleged network.
He also criticized sections of the media for not highlighting the issue strongly enough.
Congress Plans Protest
The opposition party Indian National Congress has announced plans to intensify its campaign on the issue. The party is preparing to stage a march and gherao of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly on March 17 to demand a thorough investigation and accountability.
Government Reiterates Ban on Opium Cultivation
Meanwhile, the state government has reiterated that opium cultivation is not permitted anywhere in Chhattisgarh unless specifically authorized under central government regulations, which currently do not apply to the state.
Officials say the statewide survey and strict monitoring are intended to ensure compliance with the law and prevent illegal narcotics production.
The government has assured that appropriate action will be taken if any violations are found during the investigation.
