NHPC Limited Teesta-VI (500 MW) Project Secures Triple ISO Certification in Sikkim

SIKKIM — NHPC Limited has announced that its 500 MW Teesta-VI Hydroelectric Project has earned three major international certifications: ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018, marking a significant milestone in quality, environmental stewardship, and workplace safety.

The certifications reinforce the company’s commitment to sustainable and responsible hydropower development in India’s northeastern region.

Quality Management Recognition

The ISO 9001:2015 certification acknowledges the implementation of a comprehensive Quality Management System (QMS) at the Teesta-VI Project. This framework ensures structured operational processes, improved efficiency, and enhanced stakeholder satisfaction.

For a large-scale infrastructure project such as Teesta-VI, the certification reflects NHPC’s emphasis on consistent performance standards, accountability, and timely execution.

Environmental Responsibility in a Sensitive Region

The ISO 14001:2015 certification validates the project’s Environmental Management System (EMS). Located in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan state of Sikkim, the project operates under strict environmental safeguards.

The certification affirms NHPC’s commitment to minimizing environmental impact, conserving natural resources, managing waste responsibly, and complying with environmental regulations. Company officials said the project integrates sustainable construction practices and continuous environmental monitoring to balance development with ecological preservation.

Focus on Occupational Health and Safety

The ISO 45001:2018 certification recognizes the project’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS). Hydropower construction in mountainous terrain involves complex engineering challenges, making worker safety a critical priority.

The certification highlights proactive risk assessment, strict safety protocols, regular training programs, and continuous monitoring systems designed to protect employees and contractors.

Boost to India’s Renewable Energy Capacity

With an installed capacity of 500 MW, the Teesta-VI Hydroelectric Project is expected to significantly strengthen renewable energy generation in northeastern India. The project contributes to reducing carbon emissions, improving grid stability, and enhancing regional power supply reliability.

By securing these three ISO certifications, NHPC has further strengthened its position as a leading public sector enterprise committed to operational excellence, sustainability, and continuous improvement in India’s growing hydropower sector.

Company officials emphasized that the certifications represent not just compliance milestones, but an ongoing commitment to innovation, transparency, and responsible infrastructure development as India advances its renewable energy goals.
