Sennheiser Sound Protex Plus Review: More Than Earphones, a Shield for Your Ears—but at a Cost

New Delhi — Consumers often spend thousands of rupees on premium earphones and headphones, but rarely invest in products designed to protect their hearing. Sennheiser’s Sound Protex Plus aims to change that narrative. Priced at ₹2,990, the device positions itself not as an audio gadget, but as hearing protection against everyday noise. After more than a month of testing, the results are mixed.

Unlike traditional earbuds, the Sound Protex Plus is designed to reduce or block environmental noise using interchangeable acoustic filters. Users can choose from four filter levels—Low, Mid, High, and Full—depending on how much noise reduction they need. The Full filter aims to block almost all surrounding sound, while the Low filter provides light protection.

The unboxing experience is similar to that of standard earbuds, though the contents highlight its unique purpose. The cardboard packaging clearly explains usage instructions and filter options. Inside the box, users receive three ear tip sizes (small, medium, and large), four sets of filters, a compact storage pouch, and a neck cord that prevents the earbuds from being lost when not in use.

In terms of performance, the Sound Protex Plus delivers effective noise reduction. During home testing, the Full filter successfully eliminated loud television noise from adjacent rooms, though nearby conversations remained audible. The device also performed well during air travel, significantly reducing cabin noise and making flights more comfortable.

However, comfort is where the product struggles. The earbuds need to be inserted deep into the ear canal, leaving only the small fins visible for removal. This deep insertion can feel uncomfortable, especially during extended use. In testing, continuous usage beyond five minutes proved difficult. While comfort may vary from person to person, this remains a notable drawback.

Despite the discomfort, the Sound Protex Plus can be useful for people who are highly sensitive to noise, frequently travel, or need silence to focus while working or studying. It serves its primary function—noise protection—well, but may not be suitable for long listening sessions.

Final Verdict:
Sennheiser Sound Protex Plus is a niche product that does its job effectively but compromises on comfort. For users prioritizing hearing protection over convenience, it may be worth considering. Based on price and performance, the device earns a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars.
