Bastar/Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh:
A major theft has been reported at the famous Danteshwari Temple located in Jagdalpur city of Bastar district, Chhattisgarh. Unknown thieves broke into the temple late last night and made off with valuable gold and silver ornaments. The entire incident has been captured on the temple’s CCTV cameras.
Following the incident, Bastar Police immediately launched an investigation. The case falls under the jurisdiction of Kotwali Police Station. Early this morning, temple priests and committee members informed the police, after which teams from the local police, cyber cell, and forensic department reached the spot.
Entry through old doorway suspected
Bastar Superintendent of Police Shalabh Sinha stated that the theft took place at the Danteshwari Temple located inside the Rajmahal complex. Preliminary investigation suggests that the thief entered the temple through an old door near the sanctum area. Authorities are currently assessing the total value of the stolen gold and silver ornaments and the overall loss caused to the temple.
CCTV footage under examination
According to police officials, CCTV footage shows a single thief inside the temple carrying out the crime. An attempt was also made to break open the donation box. Police are examining CCTV footage from the temple as well as cameras installed across Jagdalpur city to trace the escape route of the accused.
Forensic team collecting evidence
A forensic team is present at the site and is collecting crucial evidence. At the time of the incident, a Home Guard personnel was deployed at the temple, and his role is also being examined as part of the investigation.
Temple closed for devotees
After the theft, the temple has been temporarily closed to devotees as a precautionary measure. Hundreds of devotees visit the Danteshwari Temple daily. Goddess Danteshwari is considered the presiding deity of Bastar and holds immense religious significance.
Notably, during the world-famous Bastar Dussehra, which is celebrated for 75 days, the sacred umbrella (chhatra) of Goddess Danteshwari is placed on a massive chariot and taken on a ceremonial procession through the city.
Police officials have assured that the accused will be arrested soon and the case will be solved at the earliest.
