T20 World Cup 2026 Row: Bangladesh’s Participation in Doubt as ICC Sets January 21 Deadline

Dhaka: With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 drawing closer, uncertainty continues to loom over Bangladesh’s participation. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has remained firm on its stance that the national team faces security risks in India and has demanded that its World Cup matches be shifted to Sri Lanka. In response, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has now set January 21 as the final deadline to resolve the issue.

Here are the five key points explaining the latest developments in the controversy:

1. ICC Rejects Bangladesh’s Security Concerns

According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, an ICC delegation recently visited Bangladesh and held meetings with BCB officials and representatives of the Bangladesh government. This was the second meeting within a week, following an earlier discussion via video conference. During the talks, Bangladesh once again raised concerns over the safety of its players in India and reiterated its demand to move matches to Sri Lanka. However, the ICC reportedly dismissed these concerns, stating that there is no specific threat targeting Bangladesh.

2. No Change in Schedule or Venues

The ICC has made it clear that the original tournament schedule will remain unchanged. Bangladesh is placed in Group C, and there will be no reshuffling of groups or relocation of matches. Bangladesh had proposed replacing Ireland in Group B and shifting its matches to Sri Lanka, while moving Ireland to Group C instead. This proposal was rejected by the ICC, especially after Ireland opposed the idea. Officials also stated that there is no time left to make such logistical changes.

3. January 21: Final Decision Deadline

Sources close to the meeting revealed that the ICC has given Bangladesh until January 21 to clearly communicate whether it intends to participate in the T20 World Cup and whether it is willing to play its matches in India. If Bangladesh fails to provide a clear answer by then, the ICC will take a unilateral decision on the matter.

4. Replacement Team on the Cards

The ICC has reportedly warned the BCB that refusal to play in India could result in Bangladesh being excluded from the tournament. In that scenario, the ICC would name a replacement team. Based on current rankings, Scotland is considered the strongest contender to replace Bangladesh if required.

5. Dispute Ongoing for Nearly Three Weeks

The controversy has been ongoing for almost three weeks. On January 4, the BCB formally wrote to the ICC requesting that its matches be shifted out of India. This move came after Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman was released from the Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2026 squad following protests in India. The BCB claims that an independent security assessment commissioned by the ICC highlighted potential threats during matches in India.
However, the ICC clarified that a general security advisory — indicating a medium to high threat level — was issued to all 20 participating nations, and it did not single out Bangladesh. Such advisories, the ICC emphasized, are a standard procedure ahead of global sporting events.

As the January 21 deadline approaches, the cricketing world awaits a decisive outcome that could significantly impact the T20 World Cup 2026 lineup.
