New Delhi, September 23, 2026: The Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹810.79 crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the supply of 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) along with associated equipment to the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The agreement was signed in New Delhi on Wednesday in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The procurement has been placed under the Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category, making it another significant order for an Indian defence manufacturer under the country’s indigenous procurement framework.
160 SAT-SAAW Weapons to Be Supplied to IAF
Under the contract, BDL will manufacture and supply 160 SAT-SAAW weapons to the Indian Air Force, together with the equipment required for their operation.
The ₹810.79 crore agreement is a domestic contract and is not classified as a related-party transaction.
The order gives BDL a major production programme for an indigenously developed air-to-ground weapon and adds to the company’s portfolio of defence systems supplied to India’s armed forces.
What is SAT-SAAW?
SAT-SAAW, or Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon, is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide weapon designed to strike airfield infrastructure and other designated ground targets from a stand-off distance.
Unlike conventional bombs that require an aircraft to approach relatively close to the target, a stand-off weapon allows the launching aircraft to release the weapon from a greater distance before it reaches the target.
Available reports on the system put its effective engagement range at around 90–100 km, although the precise range can depend on the weapon configuration, release conditions and mission profile.
The weapon is intended to provide the IAF with an additional precision-strike option against airfield-related targets while allowing compatible aircraft to operate at greater stand-off distances.
Which Aircraft Can Carry SAT-SAAW?
The SAT-SAAW system has been designed for integration with multiple Indian Air Force aircraft.
The platforms identified for the weapon include:
- SEPECAT Jaguar
- Hawk
- Su-30MKI
The ability to deploy the weapon from different aircraft gives the IAF flexibility in selecting platforms according to mission requirements.
DRDO’s Role in SAT-SAAW Development
SAT-SAAW has been indigenously designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The system represents the development of a precision-guided air-to-ground weapon within India’s domestic defence research and manufacturing ecosystem. BDL will undertake production and supply under the newly signed Ministry of Defence contract.
The programme therefore brings together three key elements of India’s defence production chain: DRDO as the indigenous technology developer, BDL as the production agency, and the Indian Air Force as the end user.
60% Indigenous Content

The SAT-SAAW supplied under the agreement will have 60% indigenous content. The Ministry of Defence has also provided for further indigenisation of important subsystems.
