Bilaspur, September 10, 2026: Ramesh Chandra Mahapatra has assumed charge as Director (Technical-Operations) of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL). He has also been given additional charge of Director (Technical) – Projects & Planning.
On the occasion of his taking charge, heads of various departments, officers and employees of SECL congratulated Mahapatra and extended their best wishes.
After assuming office, Mahapatra held a review meeting with the company’s department heads and General Managers of different operational areas. The meeting focused on SECL’s key operational priorities, production-related activities and ongoing work across various areas.
More than Three Decades of Mining Experience
Mahapatra brings more than three decades of experience in the mining sector. Before taking charge as Director (Technical) at SECL, he was serving as General Manager of the Jhanjra Area of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL).
He has extensive experience in mining operations, project management and strategic leadership, having handled several important responsibilities during his long career in the coal industry.
An alumnus of IIT-BHU, Mahapatra completed his degree in Mining Engineering in 1990. He also holds an MBA in Human Resource Management and is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India).
Career Began with SECL
Mahapatra began his professional career at Surakachhar Colliery in SECL’s Korba Area. Over the years, he has held several key positions, including Colliery Manager, Project Officer, Additional General Manager and General Manager.
During his career, he has successfully led several major underground and opencast mining projects of Coal India.
His contributions include improving production, adopting modern mining technologies, resolving complex issues related to land acquisition and rehabilitation, and strengthening coordination with local communities.
Represented Indian Coal Sector at International Platforms
Mahapatra has also represented India’s coal sector at international forums. His engagements have included participation in the African Mining Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa, as well as discussions related to industrial cooperation in the Czech Republic.
With his extensive operational experience, technical expertise and leadership capabilities, Mahapatra’s new role is expected to provide further momentum to SECL’s operations, production, technological upgradation and project execution.
