Mungeli / Raipur: The Congress party’s national leadership is strengthening its organisational grip under Rahul Gandhi. Thousands of party workers and leaders from across the country attended the ‘Vote Chori, Desh Bachao’ programme held at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. However, the absence of several prominent leaders from Mungeli district in Chhattisgarh, including the District Congress President, has now become a subject of discussion in local politics.
Grassroots Congress workers in Mungeli are expressing dissatisfaction. They question why responsible leaders from the district stayed away from an important national programme meant to demonstrate party unity and support for Rahul Gandhi’s leadership.
Madhya Pradesh Congress Suspends 60 Leaders
In Madhya Pradesh, the Congress has taken strict action against leaders who remained absent from the Delhi rally. As many as 60 leaders have been suspended. Among them are:
- 9 District Presidents
- 5 Vice-Presidents
- 14 General Secretaries
- 32 Secretaries
This large-scale suspension has now triggered demands for similar accountability in Chhattisgarh Congress as well.
Questions Raised in Mungeli
The biggest question currently doing the rounds in Mungeli is whether the state organisation will take action against the District Congress President, the shadow MLA (chhaya vidhayak), and other senior leaders who kept a distance from the national programme.
Workers feel that leaders who hold positions of power and prestige in the organisation must also show equal responsibility and active participation during party movements and struggles.
Eyes on Chhattisgarh PCC President Deepak Baij
All attention is now on Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Deepak Baij. Party workers are expecting him to take a firm stand on the issue.
Will Deepak Baij follow the example set by Madhya Pradesh Congress and initiate organisational action in Chhattisgarh? Will Mungeli District Congress President Ghanashyam Verma, the shadow MLA, and other absent leaders be asked to explain their absence or face disciplinary measures?
After the suspension of 60 Congress leaders in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, the discussion among the people and Congress workers of Mungeli has intensified: Will accountability be fixed in Chhattisgarh Congress as well, or will the senior leaders of Mungeli continue to enjoy immunity?
The coming days will show whether the state leadership decides to act or allows the matter to remain limited to discussions.
