New Delhi/Raipur: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Monday showcased the state’s vast investment potential in the energy sector at the four-day Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The global event has drawn participation from more than 130 countries.
Speaking at a roundtable meeting during the summit, Sai outlined investment opportunities worth approximately ₹5.60 lakh crore in Chhattisgarh’s energy sector over the next five years and invited domestic and international investors to partner with the state.
Ambitious Green Energy Targets
The Chief Minister said a comprehensive plan has been prepared for the expansion of the energy sector in Chhattisgarh. This includes renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 23,923 MW, involving an investment of about ₹1.33 lakh crore, and the expansion of thermal power generation capacity requiring around ₹3.27 lakh crore.
The state government aims to raise its green energy capacity from the current 3,000 MW to 15,000 MW by 2030. It is also working to increase the share of green energy in total electricity demand from the present 15 per cent to more than 45 per cent.
Sai noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has set a national target of achieving 500 GW of power generation capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030. Chhattisgarh will make a significant contribution to this goal. The state currently has more than 28,000 MW of coal-based thermal power capacity. Keeping the rising demand for electricity in view, the government is pursuing the balanced development of thermal power along with solar, hydro, biomass and energy storage projects.
Focus on Energy Storage
Highlighting the importance of energy storage for uninterrupted power supply, the Chief Minister said the state has identified 10 pumped storage hydroelectric projects with a total capacity of 12,300 MW, involving a proposed investment of about ₹65,000 crore. Plans are also under way to install 10,000 MWh of battery energy storage systems in the state over the next two years.
As an example of progress already made, Sai cited the 100 MW solar project in Rajnandgaon, which is operational along with a 40 MW/120 MWh battery storage system. Khaira village in Rajnandgaon district has become Chhattisgarh’s first fully solar-powered village, with 2 kW solar panels installed on the roofs of all 141 houses, generating a total of 282 kW. Additionally, 93 houses constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in the village are being supplied with solar power at no cost to the residents.
Expanding Solar Reach
Under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, nearly 1.26 lakh solar plants have already been installed in the state. About 1.66 lakh solar irrigation pumps are irrigating approximately 1.94 lakh hectares of agricultural land. Under the Pradhan Mantri KUSUM scheme, the state plans to set up solar plants with a total capacity of 395 MW.
Sai also pointed to the abundant availability of agricultural residue, cattle dung and other organic resources in Chhattisgarh, which offer significant potential for the production of Compressed Biogas, Bio-ethanol and Green Hydrogen. The state government is working to convert these opportunities into new industries and investment avenues.
During the summit, the Chief Minister visited the Chhattisgarh stall, where major energy projects, renewable energy resources, the use of modern technology and investment opportunities were displayed. He interacted with officials present at the stall and held discussions with investors and industry representatives from India and abroad. Sai briefed them on the state’s industrial policies, available resources, developing energy infrastructure and investment prospects.
