Coimbatore : A seven-year-old boy was crushed to death after falling into the gap between a moving train and the railway platform while attempting to alight at Dharmapuri railway station on Wednesday. His father was also seriously injured in the incident.
The deceased was identified as Yasiriyan, a Class 2 student at a private school in Dharmapuri. His father, Muniyappan, 34, is a resident of Paisuhalli village near Dharmapuri and works for a company involved in replenishing cash at ATMs.
Father and Son Had Gone to See Off Family
According to the Railway Police, Muniyappan and his son had gone to Dharmapuri railway station to see off his wife Suganya, 28, and other family members, who were travelling to Kerala.
The family members had boarded the Bengaluru–Ernakulam Express at Dharmapuri.
As the train began moving away from the platform, Muniyappan reportedly attempted to get down while carrying his young son.
Both Fell Between Train and Platform
Muniyappan apparently lost his balance while attempting to alight from the moving train. He and Yasiriyan fell into the gap between the moving train and the platform.
Passengers and people present at the station raised an alarm after witnessing the incident. The train was subsequently brought to a halt.
Railway Police reached the spot and recovered the boy’s body.
Boy Dies, Father Seriously Injured
Yasiriyan suffered fatal injuries in the accident and was declared dead.
His body was taken to Dharmapuri Government Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Muniyappan also sustained serious injuries in the fall. He was initially admitted to the same government hospital and was later shifted to a private hospital in Coimbatore for further treatment.
Railway Police Begin Investigation
The Dharmapuri Railway Police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, including how the father and son fell from the moving train.
The tragic incident has also highlighted the dangers of attempting to board or alight from a train while it is in motion, particularly when travelling with young children.
