Kathmandu, Nepal: Authorities in Nepal have imposed an indefinite curfew in parts of Sunsari District, which borders India, following communal violence that claimed the life of one person and left more than 12 others injured, including members of the security forces.
The restrictions were extended after officials reviewed the security situation and concluded that additional measures were necessary to prevent further violence and restore public order.
Violence Erupts Following Dispute Between Two Religious Groups
According to Nepal Police, the unrest began on Sunday in the Kaptanganj area after a dispute broke out between members of two religious communities during separate celebratory events.
As tensions escalated, clashes erupted between rival groups. Security personnel intervened to disperse the crowds, and during the operation, police opened fire, resulting in the death of one individual.
Authorities reported that more than 12 people, including security personnel, sustained injuries during the violence. Two of the injured remain in critical condition and are receiving medical treatment.
Curfew Extended Until Further Notice
The District Administration Office (DAO) in Sunsari announced that the curfew, initially imposed on Monday, has now been extended until further notice.
Following a security review meeting involving representatives of political parties, local stakeholders, and government officials, Chief District Officer Ishwar Prasad Aryal assessed the evolving situation and discussed strategies to reduce tensions and restore normalcy.
After the meeting, Assistant Chief District Officer Poshan Lamichhane confirmed that the curfew would remain in effect indefinitely or until a new official order is issued.
Areas Under Restrictions
The restrictions continue across several sensitive areas of Sunsari District, including:
- Harinagara Bazaar
- Bhutaha Bazaar
- Kaptanganj Bazaar
- Ghuski Bazaar
- Devanaganj Bazaar
Authorities have also enforced prohibitory orders, limiting public gatherings and movement in these locations to prevent further clashes.
Temporary Relaxation for Highway Traffic
To minimize disruption for travelers and commercial transportation, officials temporarily relaxed the curfew along the East-West Highway, which passes through Sunsari District.
Movement was permitted between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., allowing essential travel and transportation. After 3:00 p.m., the curfew was reimposed, and restrictions remain in place until further notice.
Political Leaders Appeal for Peace
Nepal’s ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) issued a public statement urging all communities to maintain peace, social harmony, and religious tolerance.
The party called upon citizens, community leaders, and local organizations to avoid actions that could further inflame tensions and to cooperate with security agencies working to restore stability.
Authorities Continue Security Operations
Security forces remain deployed across the affected areas, conducting patrols and monitoring the situation closely.
Government officials have stated that maintaining law and order, protecting civilians, and preventing additional violence remain their highest priorities as investigations into the incident continue.
