Gopalakrishnan Ganesan, IRAS, appointed as Counsellor (Economic) at the Indian Embassy in Washington, while Jivisha Joshi Gangopadhya, IRTS, will serve as First Secretary (Legal) at India’s Permanent Mission to the WTO in Geneva.
New Delhi : The Government of India has approved the appointment of two railway officers to key international assignments, strengthening India’s representation in economic, trade and legal matters at important diplomatic and multilateral institutions.
Gopalakrishnan Ganesan appointed Counsellor (Economic) in Washington
The Competent Authority has approved the appointment of Shri Gopalakrishnan Ganesan, IRAS, presently on central deputation to the Ministry of Steel as Director, as Counsellor (Economic), Economic Wing, Embassy of India, Washington, D.C., USA.
The post is a Director-level foreign assignment of the Government of India under the Department of Economic Affairs.
Ganesan will replace Vivek Chaudhary, IES, whose approved tenure ends on August 15, 2026. His appointment will be for three years from the date he assumes charge, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
His tenure as Director in the Ministry of Steel under the Central Staffing Scheme will be curtailed to enable him to take up the new international assignment.
Jivisha Joshi Gangopadhya appointed First Secretary (Legal) at WTO
The government has also approved the appointment of Ms. Jivisha Joshi Gangopadhya, SG/IRTS, who is currently on central deputation to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) as Deputy Secretary.
She has been appointed as First Secretary (Legal), Permanent Mission of India (PMI) to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Geneva.
The position is a Deputy Secretary-level foreign post under the Department of Commerce.
The appointment will be for three years from the date of assumption of charge, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Her central deputation as Deputy Secretary in DPIIT will be curtailed to facilitate the new assignment.
Strengthening India’s international representation
The appointments place experienced officers from the Indian Railways’ finance and traffic services in important international roles dealing with economic diplomacy, trade and legal matters.
The assignments in Washington, D.C., and Geneva are particularly significant given the role of the Indian Embassy and India’s Permanent Mission to the WTO in advancing the country’s economic and trade interests globally.
