Paddy procurement season to begin from September 1; government announces higher rates for Grade A and common paddy
Chennai, August 10, 2026: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday announced an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for paddy and sugarcane, describing the revised rates as the highest in the history of the state.
The announcement was made in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly under Rule 110. The Chief Minister said the procurement season for paddy would begin on September 1.
Higher MSP for Paddy
The state government has increased the MSP for Grade A paddy by ₹289 per quintal, while the MSP for common paddy has been increased by ₹159 per quintal.
Following the revision, farmers will receive:
- Grade A paddy: ₹2,750 per quintal
- Common paddy: ₹2,600 per quintal
The Chief Minister said the increase represents a significant step toward improving returns for farmers.
He described the revised procurement prices as a historic move and said the government would continue to focus on strengthening agricultural incomes.
Sugarcane Price Increased to ₹4,000 Per Tonne
The government has also announced a higher price for sugarcane, with farmers set to receive ₹4,000 per tonne.
This includes the state’s incentive of ₹709.50 per tonne, in addition to the central base rate of ₹3,290.50 per tonne.
The revised rate is aimed at providing additional financial support to sugarcane growers and strengthening rural livelihoods.
Government Highlights Increase Over Previous Years
Comparing the revised rates with those of the previous five years, Vijay claimed that the MSP had increased by only ₹156 during the earlier DMK regime, while the present government has increased the sugarcane price by ₹360.50 per tonne in its first year.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the latest announcements demonstrate the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and improving agricultural income.
Government Reaffirms Support for Farmers
Vijay said the government would continue to introduce measures aimed at supporting the farming community.
He emphasized that strengthening agriculture is essential not only for farmers’ incomes but also for rural livelihoods and the state’s broader economic development.
The revised MSPs for paddy and sugarcane are expected to provide farmers with higher returns during the upcoming procurement and crushing seasons.
