NPCIL Signs MoU with IIT Bombay to Accelerate Artificial Intelligence Adoption Across Nuclear Power Operations

New Delhi : Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) to drive the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies across the organization. The strategic collaboration marks a significant milestone in NPCIL’s ongoing digital transformation journey and underscores its commitment to leveraging advanced technologies for enhancing operational efficiency, safety, and innovation.

The partnership brings together NPCIL’s expertise in nuclear power generation and IIT Bombay’s leadership in Artificial Intelligence research and innovation to develop secure, indigenous, and future-ready AI solutions for the country’s nuclear energy sector.

AI to Transform Key Business Functions

As part of the initial phase of the collaboration, NPCIL and IIT Bombay will jointly develop and deploy Large Language Model (LLM)-based solutions to improve several critical business functions within the organization.

The first phase will focus on AI-enabled solutions for:

  • Procurement
  • Contracts & Materials Management (CMM)
  • Human Resources (HR)
  • Vigilance

The deployment of AI-powered systems is expected to streamline workflows, improve decision-making, enhance productivity, and automate routine administrative processes while maintaining high standards of governance and compliance.

Advanced AI Applications Planned for Future Phases

Beyond the initial implementation of LLM-based technologies, the collaboration envisions the adoption of a broad range of advanced AI-driven applications in future phases.

These include:

  • Predictive maintenance for critical nuclear infrastructure.
  • Engineering intelligence solutions to improve plant operations.
  • Digital twin technologies for real-time monitoring and simulation.
  • AI-powered training simulators for workforce development.
  • Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications for technical training and operational support.
  • Intelligent enterprise solutions to enhance organizational efficiency and knowledge management.

The phased approach is expected to gradually integrate AI across multiple operational and administrative domains, creating a more intelligent and digitally enabled enterprise.

Strengthening Operational Excellence and Safety

The partnership aims to combine NPCIL’s decades of experience in nuclear power generation with IIT Bombay’s cutting-edge research capabilities to develop secure, indigenous, and future-ready AI technologies.

The initiative is expected to deliver multiple benefits, including:

  • Enhanced operational excellence
  • Improved decision-making through AI-driven insights
  • Higher levels of safety and reliability
  • Greater process efficiency
  • Optimized resource management
  • Strengthened knowledge management systems

Given the highly regulated nature of the nuclear energy sector, AI applications will be developed with a strong emphasis on security, reliability, and operational integrity.

Supporting India’s Digital Transformation Vision

The collaboration aligns with the Government of India’s broader vision of promoting digital transformation, technological self-reliance, and the adoption of emerging technologies across Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs).

By investing in indigenous AI capabilities, NPCIL aims to modernize its operations while contributing to the development of advanced technological solutions within the country.

The initiative also supports national priorities under Digital India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and India’s growing focus on Artificial Intelligence-driven innovation in strategic sectors.

Driving Innovation in India’s Nuclear Power Sector

Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being recognized as a transformative technology for the global energy industry, enabling predictive analytics, intelligent automation, asset optimization, and improved operational resilience.

Through this collaboration with IIT Bombay, NPCIL seeks to harness these capabilities to strengthen its position as India’s premier nuclear power utility while ensuring that technological advancements continue to support the highest standards of nuclear safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

The partnership is expected to serve as a model for integrating advanced digital technologies into critical infrastructure and strategic public sector enterprises.
