Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh | June 2026: A transformative healthcare initiative by Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) is changing the lives of hundreds of children suffering from congenital heart diseases in rural India. Through its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, Project Nanha Sa Dil, the company has provided life-saving cardiac treatment to hundreds of underprivileged children, including six-year-old Pranjali Prajapati, the daughter of a farmer from Singrauli district in Madhya Pradesh.
The initiative, launched in partnership with Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospitals, is helping bridge critical healthcare gaps in remote and underserved communities by offering free screening, diagnosis, surgery, and follow-up care for children born with heart defects.
A Life-Saving Intervention for a Farmer’s Daughter
Born into a modest farming family in Sarai village of Singrauli district, Pranjali Prajapati frequently suffered from fatigue, weakness, and recurring illnesses. Her parents, who earn approximately ₹5,000–6,000 per month, struggled to identify the cause of her health problems and lacked access to specialized medical treatment.
Their lives changed when a medical team associated with Project Nanha Sa Dil conducted a child heart screening camp in the area in collaboration with personnel from the Rashtriya Bal Suraksha Karyakram (RBSK).
Doctors suspected a heart abnormality and referred Pranjali for further evaluation.
Early Diagnosis Leads to Successful Treatment
During an echocardiography screening camp organized at the Community Health Centre (CHC), Deosar, cardiologists confirmed that Pranjali was suffering from a congenital heart defect (CHD), commonly referred to as a “hole in the heart.”
For the family, the diagnosis was emotionally and financially overwhelming. The cost of surgery, medicines, transportation, accommodation, and post-operative care was far beyond their means.
However, under NCL’s Nanha Sa Dil initiative, every expense was fully covered.
Pranjali was referred to Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Palwal, Haryana, where she underwent a successful heart surgery completely free of cost.
Today, she has returned to school, enjoys normal childhood activities, and serves as an inspiring example of how timely medical intervention can transform lives.
Building a Comprehensive Child Heart Care Ecosystem
Launched in 2025, Project Nanha Sa Dil – NCL covers the districts of:
- Singrauli (Madhya Pradesh)
- Sidhi (Madhya Pradesh)
- Sonbhadra (Uttar Pradesh)
Unlike conventional healthcare programs, the initiative addresses the entire treatment journey—from awareness generation and screening to diagnosis, surgery, rehabilitation, and long-term follow-up care.
Key Achievements of the Program
Over the past year, the project has achieved remarkable milestones:
- 534 screening camps conducted
- 38,315 children screened
- 764 echocardiograms performed
- 255 free heart surgeries facilitated
These achievements have significantly improved access to specialized pediatric cardiac care in rural and tribal communities.
Healthcare Innovation and Capacity Building
To ensure early detection of congenital heart disease, the initiative has focused on training frontline healthcare workers and conducting awareness campaigns in schools and Anganwadi centers.
A dedicated Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Screening Centre has also been established at NCL’s Bina Hospital, strengthening local diagnostic capabilities.
In addition, advanced screening technologies developed in collaboration with HD Medical USA are being used to improve diagnosis, referrals, and treatment outcomes.
Digital Monitoring Through ‘Nanhe Dil Ka Safar’
A unique feature of the program is “Nanhe Dil Ka Safar,” a digital tracking platform designed to monitor every child throughout the treatment process.
The system tracks patients from:
- Initial screening
- Medical diagnosis
- Referral process
- Surgical treatment
- Post-operative care
- Long-term follow-up
This digital approach ensures that no child requiring treatment is overlooked and allows healthcare teams to continuously monitor progress and outcomes.
Part of Coal India’s Nationwide Child Heart Care Mission
NCL’s initiative forms part of the larger Project Nanha Sa Dil launched by Coal India Limited (CIL) and implemented across several subsidiaries, including:
- Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL)
- South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL)
- Central Coalfields Limited (CCL)
- Western Coalfields Limited (WCL)
Over the past two years, the nationwide program has:
- Screened more than 1.75 lakh rural and tribal children
- Facilitated treatment for nearly 1,400 children diagnosed with congenital heart disease
- Created one of India’s largest CSR-led child heart care ecosystems
The initiative integrates awareness campaigns, diagnosis, transportation assistance, accommodation support, surgeries, and follow-up care into a single comprehensive healthcare framework.
Transforming Rural Healthcare Through CSR
As India continues efforts to reduce child mortality and improve access to specialized healthcare services, NCL’s Nanha Sa Dil initiative demonstrates the powerful impact of collaboration between public sector enterprises, healthcare institutions, technology partners, and government agencies.
For families like that of Pranjali Prajapati, the program represents much more than financial assistance—it provides a second chance at life and hope for a healthier future.
With hundreds of successful surgeries already completed and thousands of children screened, Northern Coalfields Limited continues to play a vital role in ensuring that no child is denied life-saving cardiac treatment because of economic hardship.
The initiative stands as a model of how Corporate Social Responsibility can create meaningful, long-term social impact by bringing specialized healthcare directly to the doorsteps of underserved communities across rural India.
