A massive fire broke out at a firecracker warehouse in the Katghora area of Korba district on Wednesday afternoon, triggering a series of powerful explosions that sent shockwaves across the surrounding region. Thick black smoke and towering flames were visible from several kilometers away, creating panic among nearby residents and travelers.
The warehouse is located along the Rampur Bypass Road, away from the main residential zones, which authorities say helped prevent a larger tragedy. However, a nearby village remained on high alert as explosions continued throughout the afternoon.
According to local officials, the fire started suddenly inside the warehouse and quickly spread through the facility. The large stockpile of stored fireworks ignited, causing continuous blasts that made firefighting efforts extremely challenging.
Fortunately, workers and other individuals present inside the warehouse managed to evacuate safely moments after the fire broke out. No casualties or serious injuries have been reported so far.
Fire crews from the Katghora Municipal Council rushed to the scene and immediately began operations to contain the blaze. However, repeated explosions from the burning fireworks forced firefighters to maintain a safe distance while battling the flames. Due to the intensity of the fire, additional fire engines were called in from neighboring areas to assist in the emergency response.
Authorities estimate that fireworks worth several million rupees may have been destroyed in the incident. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
Meanwhile, officers from the Katghora Police Station arrived at the scene and established a security perimeter around the affected area. Police restricted public access and urged residents to stay away from the warehouse until the situation was fully under control.
Station House Officer (SHO) Dharam Narayan Tiwari stated that the exact cause of the fire remains unknown and will be determined through an official investigation once the site is declared safe.
Emergency responders continued to spray water on the burning structure late into the day, expressing confidence that the fire would soon be brought under control. Authorities have also launched a preliminary inquiry to determine whether any safety violations or storage-related issues contributed to the incident.
The dramatic fire serves as a reminder of the significant risks associated with storing large quantities of fireworks and the importance of strict safety protocols in facilities handling explosive materials.
