State Government Extends DSPE Jurisdiction Across Chhattisgarh for Investigation into Crime No. 277/2026
Durg : The investigation into the alleged scrap theft case involving the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) is set to be taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the Chhattisgarh government granted its consent for a CBI probe.
According to the state government notification issued on September 25, 2026, consent has been granted under Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, enabling members of the Delhi Special Police Establishment to exercise their powers and jurisdiction across Chhattisgarh for investigating Crime No. 277/2026, registered at Purani Bhilai Police Station in Durg district.
The case relates to allegations of unauthorised removal and transportation of iron scrap associated with the Bhilai Steel Plant.
Crime No. 277/2026 Under Investigation
Crime No. 277/2026 was registered at Purani Bhilai Police Station under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Court records confirm that the case concerns allegations that vehicles carrying iron scrap were found transporting the material without proper authorisation. In an August 2026 order, the Chhattisgarh High Court recorded the prosecution’s case that vehicles were allegedly found carrying iron scrap along with flue dust during an inspection connected with the transportation arrangement at BSP.
Subsequent court proceedings have also referred to multiple BNS provisions in connection with Crime No. 277/2026.
Scope of the CBI Investigation
With the state government’s consent, the CBI will be able to investigate the case and examine the relevant records, police documents, evidence and other material connected with the alleged scrap theft.
The investigation may also examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged removal and transportation of the scrap and the roles of individuals or entities found connected with the case.
Any further legal action will depend on the evidence and findings that emerge during the investigation.
Case Has Already Seen Multiple Developments
The case has witnessed several developments since the FIR was registered. Court records show that arrests have taken place in connection with Crime No. 277/2026, while accused persons have subsequently approached the Chhattisgarh High Court for regular or anticipatory bail.
Local reports have also reported arrests of individuals associated with a private industrial unit in connection with allegations that scrap from BSP was being received or utilised there. These remain allegations forming part of the ongoing criminal investigation.
CBI Probe to Bring Fresh Focus on the Case
The transfer of the investigation to the CBI is expected to bring the case under a central investigative agency and could lead to a fresh examination of the available evidence, records and alleged chain of events.
The investigation will determine what happened to the scrap, how it was allegedly removed and transported, and whether other individuals or entities had any role in the alleged offences.
The allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings. No finding of guilt should be inferred against any accused solely from the registration of the case or the ongoing investigation.
