Experienced professional with nearly three decades of experience in power, mining and infrastructure sectors takes charge at NLCIL
New Delhi: Dr. Prasanna Kumar Acharya assumed charge as the Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of NLC India Limited on September 17, 2026, at the company’s Corporate Office in Neyveli.
Dr. Acharya brings nearly three decades of professional experience across the power, mining and infrastructure sectors. Before taking over as CMD, he served as Director (Finance) of NLC India Limited. Over the course of his career, he has held key positions in organisations including GRIDCO, NTPC and Tata Power.
Strong Academic and Professional Background
Dr. Acharya holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce (Honours) from Utkal University, Odisha, and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from M.S. Law College, Cuttack. He also holds a Master of Commerce from Ravenshaw University and a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
He is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of India and an Associate Member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. He earned a Ph.D. from Utkal University and has completed a Management Development Programme in Strategic Finance at IIM Lucknow.
Experience Across Power, Mining and Infrastructure
His professional experience spans power generation, transmission and distribution, mining and metro rail infrastructure. Among the major infrastructure initiatives with which he has been associated is the Phase-II project of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), estimated to have a project value of more than ₹63,000 crore.
During his tenure at NLC India Limited, Dr. Acharya led several initiatives focused on digital transformation and governance reforms. These included ERP modernisation, centralisation of finance functions, adoption of AI-enabled systems and implementation of a Vendor Invoice Management System.
He has also contributed to securing key government approvals and advancing initiatives related to the acquisition of coal and critical mineral blocks, as well as renewable energy projects.
Focus on NLCIL’s Long-Term Growth Roadmap
Dr. Acharya has played a significant role in managing joint ventures with various state utilities and supporting NLC India Limited’s long-term growth plans.
The company’s growth roadmap envisages expanding its power generation capacity to more than 20 GW and mining capacity to over 100 MTPA by 2030.
With his experience across multiple sectors and his background in finance, infrastructure and strategic management, Dr. Acharya takes charge as NLC India Limited prepares for its next phase of expansion. The company is also working towards its stated vision of progressing to Maharatna status.
Dr. Acharya is a native of Kendrapara, Odisha. He is the eldest son of Dr. Surendranath Acharya and Smt. Jyotshnarani Acharya. He is married and has two children, both of whom are pursuing their studies.
