UPSC CSE Prelims 2026 Results Announced: 13,343 Candidates Advance to Mains for 1,016 Civil Services Vacancies


New Delhi, India — The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has officially announced the results of the Civil Services Preliminary Examination (CSE) 2026, marking a major milestone for thousands of aspiring civil servants across India. According to the commission, 13,343 candidates have successfully qualified for the next stage—the prestigious Civil Services (Main) Examination 2026.

The preliminary examination was conducted on May 24, 2026, and the results were released on June 16, 2026. The successful candidates will now compete for 1,016 vacancies available across various elite government services, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS).

Competition Remains Intense

Despite a slight decrease in both vacancies and shortlisted candidates compared to the previous year, competition remains extremely fierce. In 2025, UPSC had shortlisted 14,161 candidates for 1,087 vacancies, while in 2026, the number dropped to 13,343 candidates for 1,016 positions.

The figures highlight the continued challenge faced by millions of aspirants who consider the UPSC Civil Services Examination one of the toughest competitive exams in the world.

Mandatory Online Formalities for Qualified Candidates

UPSC has clarified that the candidature of all qualified candidates remains provisional until they complete mandatory online formalities.

The application window for the Civil Services Main Examination will remain open from June 19 to June 28, 2026. During this period, candidates must log into the official UPSC portal and complete several essential requirements.

These include:

  • Payment of the examination fee of ₹200
  • Submission or updating of scribe details, if applicable
  • Requesting assistive devices or large-font question papers for eligible candidates
  • Submission of Cadre Preferences for Civil Services allocation

The commission has emphasized that even candidates who do not need to update any information must still log in, verify their details, and submit the form.

Important Warning from UPSC

UPSC has issued a critical advisory stating that candidates who fail to complete the required online verification process between June 19 and June 28, 2026, will not receive their e-Admit Card for the Main Examination.

As a result, qualified candidates are strongly advised not to delay the submission process.

Fee Exemptions

Certain categories of candidates are exempt from paying the examination fee. These include:

  • Female Candidates
  • Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)
  • Scheduled Caste (SC) Candidates
  • Scheduled Tribe (ST) Candidates

Marks, Cut-Offs, and Answer Keys

UPSC has confirmed that the marks, cut-off scores, and official answer keys for the Preliminary Examination will be released only after the final results of the Civil Services Examination 2026 and Indian Forest Service Examination 2026 are declared.
