New Delhi/Gurugram | Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Dr. Jitendra Singh visited social activist Sonam Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Tuesday night to inquire about his health as he continues his indefinite hunger strike.
The visit came shortly after Sonam Wangchuk was shifted from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital following directions issued by the Delhi High Court. Despite the transfer to a private medical facility, Wangchuk has continued his fast in solidarity with students who were reportedly injured during recent protests.
Ministers Review Wangchuk’s Health Condition
According to official sources, J.P. Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh met with doctors at Medanta Hospital to review Wangchuk’s medical condition and receive updates on his treatment.
The visit reflects the government’s attention to the activist’s health as he remains under continuous medical supervision during his ongoing protest.
Hunger Strike Continues Despite Hospital Transfer
Sonam Wangchuk, who began his indefinite hunger strike on June 28, has remained one of the central figures in the ongoing protest movement.
Although he was transferred to Medanta Hospital under judicial directions, his wife, Geetanjali Angmo, confirmed that he has decided to continue the hunger strike in support of students who were allegedly injured during recent police action against demonstrators.

Delhi High Court Orders Immediate Transfer
Earlier on Tuesday, the Delhi High Court directed the immediate transfer of Sonam Wangchuk from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital after hearing a petition filed by his wife.
The matter was heard by a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Central Government, informed the court that the government had no objection to Wangchuk’s transfer to Medanta Hospital.
The High Court subsequently instructed Medanta Hospital to:
- Constitute a Special Medical Team to supervise Wangchuk’s treatment.
- Keep him under continuous medical observation.
- Ensure he follows all medical advice provided by doctors during his hospitalization.
The court emphasized that his health should be closely monitored throughout the course of his hunger strike.
Student Protest Continues at Jantar Mantar
Meanwhile, the broader protest movement continued in New Delhi, with thousands of students and supporters returning to Jantar Mantar one day after clashes reportedly occurred during the “Parliament March”.
According to organizers, more than 5,000 protesters assembled at the demonstration site to continue their campaign.
Organizers announced that:
- The protest would continue indefinitely.
- Future marches toward Parliament would be temporarily suspended.
- The movement would remain focused on raising its demands through peaceful demonstrations.
Organizers Allege Excessive Police Force
Leaders of the protest alleged that students participating in Monday’s “Parliament March” faced excessive police action during attempts to reach Parliament.
