TMC Leader Jahangir Khan Arrested Near Nepal Border While Allegedly Planning Escape

Kolkata, India |In a major breakthrough for law enforcement agencies, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jahangir Khan was arrested on Monday by the West Bengal Police and the Special Task Force (STF) near the India-Nepal border, officials confirmed.

According to sources, Khan, a former TMC candidate from the Falta Assembly constituency, had been missing since the conclusion of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Investigators believe he was preparing to flee the country through Nepal when authorities tracked him down and took him into custody.

Multiple Criminal Cases Pending

Law enforcement officials revealed that seven criminal cases have been registered against Khan. The charges reportedly include attempted murder, extortion, rioting, and other serious offenses. In addition, India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) is investigating him in connection with an alleged money laundering case.

Authorities stated that Khan had been under surveillance for several months. His arrest was made possible through an extensive operation involving technical surveillance, intelligence gathering, and other scientific investigative methods.

STF Planning Detailed Interrogation

Senior STF officials indicated that Khan will be placed in custodial interrogation to uncover details about his alleged criminal activities and connections.

Investigators are expected to examine:

  • Communication networks
  • Financial transactions
  • Possible links to political and criminal organizations
  • Activities related to pending criminal investigations

Officials believe the interrogation could reveal crucial information that may help solve several unresolved cases in the South 24 Parganas district.

Medical Examination and Security Concerns

Following his arrest, Khan is expected to undergo a medical examination before being formally presented before the court. Authorities initially planned to take him to Falta, but security agencies are reportedly concerned about potential public anger and protests in the area.

As a precaution, officials may transport him directly to Bhawani Bhavan, the headquarters of the West Bengal State Police in Kolkata.

Long-Term Investigation Comes to an End

Police officials stated that locating Khan had been a major challenge because he had been hiding for several months. The successful operation near the Nepal border was reportedly conducted based on credible intelligence, digital surveillance, and evidence-based tracking methods.

A senior police officer, speaking anonymously, said Khan’s arrest could significantly accelerate investigations into several pending criminal cases in the region.

Controversial Political Figure

Jahangir Khan became a controversial figure during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Election campaign. He attracted widespread attention after publicly referring to himself as “Pushpa,” a reference to the popular Indian film character known for defiance and fearlessness.

He also made headlines for allegedly challenging IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma, often referred to as an “encounter specialist” from Uttar Pradesh. The remarks generated significant political controversy and drew widespread media attention.

Investigation Continues

Authorities have not yet released a detailed official statement regarding the circumstances of Khan’s arrest. However, investigators believe that questioning him could provide critical leads regarding both criminal and financial investigations currently underway.

The arrest marks one of the most significant law enforcement actions involving a prominent regional political figure in West Bengal this year, and further developments are expected as the investigation progresses.
