SJVN Extends Additional CMD Charge of Bhupender Gupta by Six Months

Mumbai/Shimla, India: SJVN Limited, a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE), has announced a six-month extension of the additional charge of the post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) to Bhupender Gupta, who currently serves as CMD of NHPC Limited.

In a regulatory filing submitted to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), SJVN stated that the Ministry of Power, Government of India, has approved the extension with effect from February 1, 2026.

Tenure Details

The extension will remain valid for a period of six months, or until a full-time CMD is appointed, or until further government ordersโ€”whichever occurs first.

The company clarified that Shri Gupta is not related to any director on SJVNโ€™s board and is not barred by SEBI or any other regulatory authority from holding a directorship.

Seasoned Power Sector Leader

Bhupender Gupta brings over 34 years of professional experience, including 31 years in power sector CPSEs, covering hydroelectric, thermal, renewable energy, transmission, and distribution segments.

He assumed charge as CMD of NHPC Limited on September 4, 2025. Notably, Gupta began his CPSU career with SJVN in 1995, where he spent over a decade contributing to the planning, erection, and commissioning of the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Project, one of Indiaโ€™s largest hydro power stations.

Over the course of his career, he has also held key positions at REC Limited, working on project financing and major government schemes, served with the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan, and functioned as Director (Technical) at THDC India Limited, playing a crucial role in project execution and commissioning.

Educational Background and Vision

Gupta holds a Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA in Operations Management. According to SJVN, his strategic focus is aligned with Indiaโ€™s transition toward non-fossil fuel energy sources to ensure long-term energy security.

His vision includes leveraging artificial intelligence, EV grid integration, cybersecurity solutions, green hydrogen, and energy storage technologies to support sustainable power generation and meet Indiaโ€™s clean energy targets.
