Durg district records 162 road fatalities between January and July 2026, down from 225 during the same period last year, as police intensify enforcement and road-safety measures.
DURG, Chhattisgarh: Road fatalities in Durg district of Chhattisgarh declined by 28% during the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period last year, with authorities attributing the improvement to intensified traffic enforcement and targeted road-safety initiatives.
Between January and July 2026, the district recorded 860 road accidents, resulting in 685 injuries and 162 deaths. During the corresponding seven-month period in 2025, 225 people were killed in road accidents.
Where Were the Most Accidents and Fatalities Recorded?
According to the available data, Supela Police Station recorded the highest number of accidents, with 139 crashes. These incidents left 102 people injured and 10 dead.
The Bhilai Nagar Police Station area recorded 82 accidents, but had the highest number of fatalities in the district, with 26 deaths.
Other areas reporting significant numbers of road fatalities included:
- Junwani: 17 deaths
- Nandini: 15 deaths
- Pulwaon: 14 deaths
The figures indicate that while some areas recorded a high number of crashes, fatality rates varied significantly depending on the location and nature of the accidents.
Targeted Enforcement Helps Reduce Fatalities
Police officials said the district identified seven major intersections for focused road-safety enforcement.
Regular action has been taken against motorists for violations including riding without helmets, driving without seat belts and reckless driving.
Authorities have also identified black spots and accident-prone stretches and undertaken measures aimed at improving road engineering and traffic management.
Other initiatives include:
- Road-safety awareness programs in schools and colleges
- Safety training in industrial areas
- Deployment of additional police personnel on vulnerable routes
- Regular vehicle inspection and enforcement drives
- Action against drunk driving and overspeeding
- Inspection of heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks
Durg Police Intensifies Action
Durg Police said enforcement is being increasingly targeted toward locations and time periods where accidents are more frequent.
In addition to checking helmet and seat-belt compliance, police are conducting checks for drunk driving and other dangerous driving practices.
Authorities said legal action, including court-imposed punishment in drunk-driving cases, has also contributed to stronger deterrence.
Police Plan Continued Enforcement
Durg SSP Vijay Agrawal said enforcement against dangerous driving practices would continue.
“Large vehicles such as buses and trucks are also being checked. This is helping reduce accidents. Compared with last year, fewer people have died in road crashes,” Agrawal said.
He added that police would continue strict action against overspeeding, drunk driving, driving without helmets and driving without seat belts.
Officials said the objective is to further reduce both the number of road accidents and the resulting fatalities across Durg district.
