L&T Secures Mega Contract from JSW Steel to Drive Major Expansion in India’s Metals Sector


New Delhi  — Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a landmark “mega” contract from JSW Steel, marking the largest domestic order ever awarded to its Minerals & Metals (M&M) division. The deal underscores strong momentum in India’s steel sector and reinforces L&T’s position as a leading engineering and construction player.

The announcement was made through a regulatory filing in accordance with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements.

Scope of the Project

Under the contract, L&T will handle comprehensive engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for key steel manufacturing infrastructure. The scope includes:

  • Installation of advanced blast furnaces
  • Development of steel melt shops
  • Construction of associated process facilities

These projects will be executed across multiple expansion sites, primarily at JSW Steel’s facilities in Ballari and Paradip.

Supporting JSW Steel’s Growth Vision

The order aligns with JSW Steel’s long-term strategy to increase its crude steel production capacity from 35 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to more than 50 MTPA by 2031. The expansion includes both brownfield upgrades and greenfield developments, aimed at strengthening the company’s domestic and global competitiveness.

Long-Standing Strategic Partnership

L&T highlighted its over three-decade-long relationship with JSW Steel, during which both companies have collaborated on several complex metallurgical projects. The latest contract further deepens this partnership, reflecting mutual trust and a shared commitment to large-scale industrial growth.

Leadership Commentary

D K Sen, Advisor to the Chairman and Managing Director for Development Projects and Minerals & Metals at L&T, described the order as a “defining milestone” for the company’s metals business. He emphasized that the win reinforces confidence in L&T’s engineering excellence and project execution capabilities.

T Kumaresan, Senior Vice President and Head of Minerals & Metals, added that the contract strengthens L&T’s leadership in delivering complex metallurgical infrastructure projects with precision and efficiency.

Contract Value and Industry Significance

The project is classified as a “mega” order under L&T’s internal framework, indicating a value range between ₹5,000 crore and ₹10,000 crore (approximately $600 million to $1.2 billion). The deal highlights continued investment in India’s industrial sector and signals strong demand for large-scale steel infrastructure.
