New Delhi : In a landmark initiative to strengthen regional connectivity, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced the launch of India’s first amphibious aircraft fleet, capable of operating on both water and conventional runways.
The pioneering project is designed to connect lakes, rivers, lagoons, and coastal regions, with the Kochi–Lakshadweep corridor identified as the first operational route. The initiative is expected to improve transportation access to remote island and coastal communities while boosting tourism, trade, and regional economic development.
Unlike conventional aircraft, amphibious planes can take off and land on both land and water, making them ideal for destinations where airport infrastructure is limited. The fleet is expected to enhance last-mile connectivity and provide a faster, more efficient travel option for passengers across India’s vast coastline and inland waterways.
The AAI said the project represents a significant step toward expanding India’s regional aviation network and aligns with the country’s broader vision of improving multimodal transport infrastructure. By integrating air and water transportation, the initiative aims to bring underserved regions closer to the national transport grid.
The Kochi to Lakshadweep route is expected to serve as a model for future expansion to other coastal and inland water destinations across the country.
