New Delhi / In a major infrastructure push for Bihar’s railway network, Indian Railways has approved a ₹976 crore multitracking project for the 29-kilometre Danapur–Fatuha section of the East Central Railway. The project is expected to significantly enhance passenger and freight transportation by easing congestion on one of the busiest rail corridors in the Patna region.
The approval marks a crucial step toward strengthening rail connectivity, improving operational efficiency, and supporting the state’s growing industrial and economic activities.
Project to Ease Congestion on Busy Patna Rail Corridor
The Danapur–Fatuha section serves as a vital link in the Patna railway network and currently experiences heavy traffic from both passenger and freight trains. With the addition of new railway lines, the project aims to eliminate bottlenecks, improve punctuality, and increase the line’s carrying capacity.
The approved project includes three major components:
- Construction of the third and fourth railway lines between Danapur and Patna.
- Construction of a third railway line between Rajendra Nagar and Patna Sahib.
- Construction of the third and fourth railway lines between Patna Sahib and Fatuha.
These infrastructure upgrades will allow smoother train operations while reducing delays across the high-density corridor.
Capacity to Increase Significantly
According to Indian Railways, the enhanced corridor will substantially increase both passenger and freight movement from the very first year of operation.
The project will enable:
- 22 additional passenger trains to operate daily.
- 18 additional freight trains every day.
- Handling of an additional 5.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight traffic.
The increased capacity is expected to improve travel convenience for passengers while strengthening freight logistics across eastern India.
Part of Major Rail Quadrupling Initiative
The Danapur–Fatuha multitracking project forms an important part of the broader railway quadrupling programme covering the strategic route connecting:
- Delhi
- Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction
- Patna
- Kiul
- Bhagalpur
- Khanna
- Howrah
This high-density route plays a critical role in supporting passenger mobility as well as the transportation of industrial and bulk commodities across northern and eastern India.
Boost for Energy and Industrial Logistics
The corridor is also an integral component of Indian Railways’ Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor, which facilitates the movement of coal, cement, minerals, and other essential raw materials.
The upgraded section will be particularly important for the upcoming 2,120 MW thermal power plant at Chausa in Buxar district, which will depend heavily on rail transportation for the movement of coal and other bulk inputs required for power generation.
The improved railway infrastructure is expected to enhance logistics efficiency and support industrial growth in the region.
Supporting Bihar’s Economic Development
Beyond increasing railway capacity, the project is expected to contribute significantly to Bihar’s socio-economic development by improving connectivity, promoting industrial investment, creating employment opportunities during construction, and strengthening supply chains.
The approval reflects Indian Railways’ continued focus on expanding infrastructure along high-density routes, improving logistics for key industries, and building a modern, efficient, and reliable rail network.
