New Delhi, : Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri visited the Digboi Centenary Museum in Assam, highlighting the historic significance of Digboi Refinery, the site of India’s first commercial oil discovery and one of the world’s oldest continuously operating oil refineries.
During his visit, the minister described Digboi as the birthplace of India’s petroleum industry, emphasizing its pivotal role in shaping the nation’s energy sector. He reflected on the remarkable journey of India’s oil and gas industry—from the country’s first commercial oil discovery in the late 19th century to its modern pursuit of energy security, self-reliance, and a clean energy transition.
According to the minister, “Discovery Well No. 1” was drilled by the Assam Railways and Trading Company Limited in October 1889, marking India’s first successful commercial oil exploration. Production from the well began in November 1890, yielding approximately 200 gallons of crude oil per day, a milestone that laid the foundation for India’s petroleum industry.
Often referred to as the “Gangotri of the Indian Oil Industry,” Digboi Refinery was commissioned in 1901 and continues to operate today, making it the world’s second-oldest operating oil refinery. The adjoining Digboi Centenary Museum preserves the refinery’s rich heritage through original machinery, historical documents, photographs, and rare artifacts, offering visitors an in-depth look at the evolution of India’s oil and gas sector.
Speaking about the visit, Hardeep Singh Puri said the museum serves as a reminder of India’s remarkable transformation from a modest oil-producing nation to one of the world’s fastest-growing energy markets. He noted that the country is significantly expanding oil and gas exploration across deepwater regions, mountain terrains, and desert landscapes to strengthen domestic production and reduce dependence on imports.
The minister also highlighted the government’s continued focus on energy security, sustainable development, and the green energy transition, stating that India is simultaneously investing in renewable energy, clean fuels, and advanced technologies while expanding conventional energy resources.
He added that the historic legacy preserved at Digboi reflects India’s enduring commitment to innovation and progress in the energy sector and symbolizes the nation’s continued efforts to build a more secure, self-reliant, and sustainable energy future under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The visit underscored the importance of preserving India’s industrial heritage while recognizing the achievements that have shaped the country’s modern energy landscape over more than a century.
